There has never been a precise estimate for the global blue whale population. There can't have been, since the sizes of some local populations (especially pygmy blue whales) have never been known or have not been taken into an account. All that is known is that there were originally about 239,000 in the antarctic (Branch's paper about antarctic blue whale population, can't remember the name) and that there are probably between 10,000 and 25,000 today. The original global population of 275,000 is probably roughly accurate, although it could easily be a couple tens of thousands off either way. The other estimates on this page are not reliable, certainly not enough to base a chart off of. It is extremely unlikely that there were fewer than 5,000 in 1994, in fact the global population was probably never that low. Therefore this chart should be removed.
