Image size[edit]

The issue of image size has been discussed before - for example, see File_talk:Disenchantment_poster.png. Fair use dictates it must be under 100,000 pixels in total size, and WP:IMAGERES states that it should be as small as possible to still be useful. At the maximum allowed size of 259×384, it gives better detail, and, as was stated in the link above: "to use the largest version permissible as to aid those who are viewing it or may have trouble viewing it at such a small size." See Wikipedia:NFCC. Also, 259×384 is not the "maximum allowed" size. nyxærös 16:42, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've reviewed Wikipedia:NFCC, and it doesn't say the lowest resolution is preferred, nor that 220×326 is the preferred resolution - only that "Low- rather than high-resolution/fidelity/bit rate is used". And, according to Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Image_resolution, "At the low pixel count end of the range, most common pictorial needs can be met with an image containing no more than about 100,000 pixels (0.1 megapixels), obtained by multiplying the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions of an image." I see no argument for going smaller than the 100,000 pixels low-resolution limit that has been established. Is there any guideline that indicates that less than that is preferred? 0.1 MP is the maximum, outside of exceptional cases. WP:FILESIZE encourages reducing non-free images to the smallest size that is still useful based on the non-free use rationale. If this image was used because of sourced commentary about the poster itself, concerns about the readability of the poster would be valid. It, however, is used only under the limited WP:NFCI #1 identification rationale. That means that the image need only be large enough to allow readers to recognize the poster. The fact that almost all readers will be viewing this file at the 220px default thumbnail width reduces the need for a larger file. In any case, this edit war over less than 0.03 MP is not a good use of either of your time, my time, or the admin who will have to individually revdel every file version of it. The difference in size between the two images is so small as to be functionally meaningless, making this dispute a good candidate for WP:LEW. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 04:02, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
