According to an article posted at Texas A&M University the image caption there reads: "[Portrait: William Tryon by J. Wollaston. This oil portrait hangs in Tryon Palace, New Bern, North Carolina. Inscribed on the back "Govr. Wm. Tryon of No. Carolina--J. Wollaston, pinxt. New York--Anno D. 1767." The authenticity of the portrait is lost to history. If it is Gov. Tryon, it is the only known likeness to date]". http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/ccbn/dewitt/mckstmerreg5.htm The image is also posted at the Tryon Palace What is the additional research that indicates the portrait is definitely not William Tryon? There is also a posting of the image at http://www.northcarolinatravels.com/hillsborough/index.htm By the way there is a woodcut from circa 1771 at http://www.prizery.com/ExhibitPlanningOverview.htm that purports to show Tryon in North Carolina.
