Hi - I'll make copyedits as I go (please revert if I inadvertently change the meaning) and jot queries below: Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:32, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

...Mike Newell scored with a penalty kick. - "scored from a penalty kick."?
I've rephrased to "scored from the penalty spot". The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 09:26, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the other historical event this was (obviously) instrumental to is Rovers winning the League in 1995 - but is that too far removed to warrant a mention....
Indeed. But I can add a sentence in there somewhere. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 09:26, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done, my book (Foster) had a nice and easy "best performance from a play-off final" team which sits quite naturally in this article despite the performance being a couple of years later. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 09:41, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
:the second tier of the English football league system, - looks clearer to me if in ndashes/mdashes rather than commas but not a biggie

prior to that appearance they had failed to win at the national stadium in four attempts. - you mean, the appearance/this match? Got a bit lost here.

he was officiating his last league match, and his fourteenth game at Wembley - sounds better if flipped...and the "last" is last, IYKWIM :)

Despite late pressure from Leicester City who were pushing for the equaliser, it was to no avail as the match ended 1–0 and Blackburn Rovers secured promotion - the "it was to no avail" comes over a bit odd as you've sort of changed subject (????)
I'm not so sure, the pressure came from Leicester, it came to no avail (i.e. the pressure did not succeed in doing anything), and thus Blackburn won. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 09:26, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
