Spacing in name[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Per MOS:INITIALS, there should be spacing in the name "R. R. Virdi". Multiple IPs (96.241.84.215 and 70.163.152.103) and an apparent SPA (Daddotmom) have reverted this to have no spacing ("R.R. Virdi"). Of the references in the article, only two could be considered reliable (the Locus and Dragon Awards references). The SPA also mentioned the lack of spacing was "much like J.R.R. Tolkien". If it's much like J. R. R. Tolkien, then we should have the name have spaces, just like we do in the Tolkien article. Thoughts? ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:29, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As an additional note, his website has the initials spaced out. See here (archive, in case the SPA is connected to the author and has things changed on the website). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:01, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's very obviously spaced. Put a space in it and remove the unsourced original research about the spacing. DrKay (talk) 16:26, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The current "About" page on the author's website has a sentence "His name is stylized and written specifically as R.R. Virdi (without spaces between the two R's for extremely personal and private reasons)", which was added sometime between December 2019 and now. You can see an archived version of that page here. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:32, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Noting that Daddotmom is now edit warring to keep things at his/her preferred version. They have now been warned to stop doing that. I did not revert it, however, as then I would be edit warring. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:50, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The spacing is incorrect. Remove spaces. Daddotmom (talk) 15:52, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Daddotmom: Being a mindless bot that only repeats what you want to do is not helpful. We've clearly spelled out what we need, yet you refuse to engage in a productive way. Use Escape Orbit as an example of how to engage in a productive way. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:15, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a cite on this. It seems to be clear how the author wishes to be known. This is also how his name is stylised on the book covers on his web site. I don't think there is any technical or policy reason why the page name can't be changed similarly, but I'll not do that yet. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 16:12, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Escape Orbit: His website is part of the problem. While the covers may be stylized that way, the site itself is inconsistent. On the main page, it's stylized as "R. R. Virdi" (with the spacing, both on the menu bar "logo" and in the gigantic ad at the top stating he's a Dragon Award nominee, and then the book covers are stylized without the space. It's his own site, so he needs to be consistent if he wants it to be stylized a specific way. Without consistency, we default to MOS:INITIALS and include the space. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:15, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The website was created by another artist. The author has made it clear what his wishes are for his professional name. I don't think it gets more clear than that. I did talk to the author and he told me it's was a creative thing and not his preference. R.R. Virdi himself has attempted to edit the page to show the correct way his professional name is shown and it was changed back. I wonder who did that???

The author has also started formal steps to rectify the issue. I suggest so-called expert editors follow the professional author's wishes and not their own personal agenda. The editor who continues to argue this point is the one creating unnecessary drama. Daddotmom (talk) 20:21, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additional, your argument of consistency has no merit. The author has made a statement. That statement trumps your assumptions of how it should be based on your real OR imagined perceptions. BTW JRR Tolkien has no spaces as well but you choose to use the Wiki page as your reference. Good work. Hubris I say. Daddotmom (talk) 20:25, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) @Daddotmom: You keep saying the "author has made it clear what his wishes are for his professional name", but that is not true. There's been no explicit statement made by the author anywhere that I've seen. Regardless of who created the website, it's the author's website. Unless he can be consistent in his own marketing, we have to default to the the default here. He should be able to make his own marketing consistent. The only agenda here is to follow the long-established guidelines and policies so content is presented consistently. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:29, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

R.r. Virdi says on his own page that "His name is stylized and specifically written as R.R. Virdi (without spaces between the two Rs for extremely personal and private reasons)." If this is not enough proof for you to stop disrespecting the author, his friends, and his fans, then you have another agenda that more about arguing a point than being right. YOU are the problem here.

R.R. Virdi has gone out of his way to get this fixed. Yet a person with some much self importance as to be blind to what is right continues to dishonor the author and disrespect his wishes. Daddotmom (talk) 20:59, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Daddotmom: Give me a freaking break. There's nothing that's been done to dishonor Virdi or anyone else here. You are blowing things completely out of proportion. I have no agenda here other than making sure the article follows policy and guidelines. Period. End of story. You edit warred to force your opinion rather than discuss things and sort things out. You've been nothing but belligerent here since your very first interaction. Instead of grandstanding with comments like "The spacing is incorrect. Remove spaces", you could have engaged in an actual discussion before now. If you had done so, This would have all been resolved long before now. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:13, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For reliable sources as proof, try any book cover. Most of us can read a book cover and would consider the stylized name on a book as proof of the author's "extremely personal and private reasons" for having his name a certain way. Geez it's common sense. Daddotmom (talk) 21:14, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is it resolved or will you continue to argue your very wrong point regarding this particular author? Daddotmom (talk) 21:15, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BTW J.R.R. Tolkien's book covers have no spaces. I guess the publisher and the author were wrong here too. Daddotmom (talk) 21:21, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

First writing and publishing[edit]

The current reference for the "Virdi began writing at the age of 18, first publishing at the age of 23." sentence doesn't say anything about either of those claims. I can't find any reference that says anything about how old he was when he first started writing, or how old he was when he first published. Do you have a reference for that, Escape Orbit? If so, please add it. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:54, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't. I was merely repairing a bad edit that left a sentence fragment. If the source doesn't verify this, feel free to remove. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 08:18, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've modified it to make it work. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:56, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
