Maryland highway articles mostly follow the editing guidelines of the national project. However, there are many Maryland-specific guidelines.

Naming convention[edit]

Articles on Maryland state-numbered highways should be titled in the form of Maryland Route X, where X is the route number. The abbreviation MD X should be introduced at the beginning of an article and used thereafter. For example, Maryland Route 135 (MD 135) is a state highway.... There are a few exceptions for articles that also discuss the county or city portions of a particular named highway, such as Owings Mills Boulevard, Old Court Road, Randolph Road, and Charles Street (Baltimore).
Articles on U.S. Highways should be titled in the form of U.S. Route X for articles covering the entirety of a U.S. Highway and U.S. Route X in Maryland for articles about only the portion of the highway in Maryland. The abbreviation US X should be introduced at the beginning of an article and used thereafter.
Articles about U.S. Highway business routes should be titled U.S. Route X Business (Y, Maryland), where X is the route number and Y is the city the route serves. Articles about U.S. Highway alternate routes should be titled U.S. Route X Alternate (Y, Maryland), or U.S. Route X Alternate (Y–Z, Maryland), where X is the route number, Y is the city at the southern or western terminus, and Z is the city at the northern or eastern terminus. The abbreviation US X Business or US X Alternate should be used after the first reference. Articles about U.S. Highway special routes with different appellations should follow this general pattern.
Articles on Interstate Highways should be titled in the form of Interstate X for articles on mainline Interstates covering the entirety of that Interstate and Interstate X in Maryland for articles about only the portion of the highway in Maryland. Articles on auxiliary Interstates should be titled Interstate X (Maryland), unless the Interstate enters another jurisdiction or the Interstate number is unique in the United States. The abbreviation I-X should be used after the first reference in an article.

When using {{infobox road}}:

The default value in the maint field is MDSHA. If portions of the highway are maintained by other agencies, include the name of the agencies (with MDSHA, if necessary) for MDTA and Baltimore DOT, or the names of the county or city, in that field.
Include all counties through which a route passes in the counties field; for Baltimore, use [[Baltimore, Maryland|City of Baltimore]].

Junction list or Exit list[edit]

Only use the section heading Exit list for Interstate Highways and other highways that are entirely freeways. For all other highways, use Junction list. Use of the {{jctint}} family of templates to construct the junction list is encouraged, including {{MDint}} for table rows. Background colors are generally not used in junction lists; if colors are used, the appropriate parameters in the {{jctbtm}} template must be used to provide a legend. Mileage figures should be to two decimal places unless sources do not provide that level of precision. If a portion of a route is in Baltimore, the term City of Baltimore should span both the County and Location columns.

Related routes[edit]

If a highway has business routes or other types of special routes, they should be listed in a Special routes section. Each special route should have a subheading and an instance of {{infobox road small}}. If a highway has auxiliary routes, which are highways with the same number but with suffixes and are not part of the mainline, they should be listed in an Auxiliary routes section. If a highway has both special routes and auxiliary routes, use those headers underneath a Related routes header.

Categories[edit]

When categorizing state highways, make sure to use a three digit sortkey with leading zeroes. For example, use 002 for Maryland Route 2, 016 for Maryland Route 16, and 404 for Maryland Route 404. When categorizing U.S. Routes and Interstates, use a two digit sortkey for mainline highways. Use a sortkey of the form XX-Y for auxiliary highways, where XX is the two digits of the mainline highway and Y is the hundreds digit. For example, use 01 for U.S. Route 1 in Maryland, 70 for Interstate 70 in Maryland, 13-1 for U.S. Route 113, and 19-2 for U.S. Route 219 in Maryland.

Category:Roads in Maryland by county

Each county has a category of the form Roads in X County, Maryland. The category for Baltimore is Roads in Baltimore, Maryland. Add a county category for every county through which a route passes. Use the full name of the article in the sortkey; add leading zeroes if the highway number has one or two digits. For example, the county category sortkey for U.S. Route 15 in Maryland would be U.S. Route 015 in Maryland.
