DescriptionAlan Seeger Natural Area (4) (8110978935).jpg
Giant old-growth white pine, Huntingdon County, within the Alan Seeger Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest.
The natural area protects a tract of old-growth forest (hemlocks, white pines, and mixed hardwoods) in a broad stream valley. The Detweiler Run Natural Area, another old-growth site, is nearby.
Although the original forest of the area was largely logged off by the 1840s, many trees were spared—possibly because of property-boundary disputes or surveying errors. The researchers Nowacki and Abrams cored hemlocks at the site that are now more than 500 years old, as well as hardwoods that are nearly as old. Their research is published in the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club (1994).
