Summary
DescriptionBattle of Dai Do, May 2, 1968.svg |
English: Battle of Dai Do, May 2, 1968. In the early morning, the companies E and G try to reconquer Dai Do. Two sections of Company E are held at Dai Do, but a third goes ahead and enters enemy lines under heavy fire. At 9:14 a.m., Dai Do is placed under U.S. control. Company H is ordered to attack Dinh To. At 9.55, they begin the attack and meet the bulk of the North Vietnamese army (ANV). At 12.00, they request reinforcements and Company E comes to their aid. At 13.40, the North Vietnamese army counterattacks at Dinh To. Companies H and E suffer heavy casualties. Company G, with the support of Company F, is ordered to make another assault on Dinh To. The attack was also to be supported by a mechanized unit of the South Vietnamese army on the left (ASV units), which did not happen. At 3:05 p.m., the Americans carried out a brief charge, but were immobilized and suffered heavy casualties. At 4:45 p.m., two companies of the North Vietnamese army counterattack the survivors of Company G who, outnumbered, runs away. A general retreat then begins. The North Vietnamese army occupies Dai Do, although it retreats that same night and the village is again occupied by another marine battalion the next morning. (This description is based on a description of the battle of Dai Do by Max Hastings in Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975, New York: Harper, 2018, pp. 488-509.)
A las 9.14, Dai Do queda bajo control estadounidense.
