Summary

Description
English: Illustrator and artist Thomas Nast immortalized the 7th Regiment’s triumphant departure on April 19, 1861, from New York City in his largest painting. The artist depicted a patriotic, flag–festooned scene as the regiment passed in review on Broadway before Major Robert Anderson, the hero of Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Although he filled the image with an air of excitement, Nast nonetheless included saddened spectators, harbingers of times to come. New York State Military Museum.
