Mai Shiranui (Japanese: 不知火 舞, Hepburn: Shiranui Mai) (alternatively written しらぬい まい) is a character in the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series of fighting games by SNK. She has also appeared in other media of these franchises and in a number of other games since her debut in 1992's Fatal Fury 2 as the first female character in an SNK fighting game. She also appears in the games' various manga and anime adaptations and plays a leading role in the live-action film.

Conception and creation[edit]

Comparison of her standing idle animation in Fatal Fury 2 (left) and The King of Fighters '94 (right). Mai has been cited as one of the first examples of breast physics in video games,[6] and it has been regarded as a significant part of her character's positive reception as a whole.

Introduced in the 1992 SNK developed fighting game Fatal Fury 2, the character was originally conceived as a male ninja simply named Ninja Master. However, after the character's concept was about sixty percent realized, a request was put in to include a female character, and they scrapped their original idea, retaining the ninja identity while developing several character concepts.[7][8] She was originally intended to be excluded from the game's sequel, Fatal Fury 3 and replaced with another female character, Alice Chrystler. However due to heavy fan request, Mai returned instead, and has since appeared in many later SNK-produced games including as a staple of The King of Fighters series. In terms of personality, they wanted her to be strong-willed woman who made most of her own equipment, and to have a taste in heavy metal music, particularly the band Pantera.[9][10]

Standing 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall, Mai is a Japanese woman with measurements of 87-55-91 cm (34-22-36 in).[11] Her long brown hair is worn in a ponytail style, with bangs that frame her face and an ornate hairpin holding it in place. Her outfit consists of a red uwagi with extended loincloth and decorative tails, while matching fingerless gloves and red tabi cover her hands and feet. Underneath her outfit Mai only wears a red thong, with a significant part of her body particular her buttocks, cleavage and the sides of her breasts exposed. While the development team originally gave her a more stern appearance in Fatal Fury 2, they softened it in her subsequent appearances.[12][10] For Fatal Fury 3, several redesigns were considered, including a full armored appearance in heavy ninja gear,[13] before changing her attire to incorporate a leotard. When asked if this was done to reduce the amount of exposure from her outfit, the development team responded there was "no reason in particular".[9] Subsequent games however reverted back to her previous design, which has remained mostly consistent since with minimal changes.[12]

In video games, the character was originally voiced by Akoya Sogi,[2] with Ami Koshimizu taking over the role with the release of King of Fighters: Sky Stage in 2010. Koshimizu stated she initially had an image of Mai as a "mature older sister", but when they directed her to portray the character as a "cheerful older sister in the neighborhood" instead, she tried to balance the portrayal with a hint of sexiness. To this end, she spoke in a lower tone than normal, and used a lot of expression to create a sense of familiarity to give th impression someone could easily be friends with her.[3]

Post-Fatal Fury[edit]

As her design was refined for The King of Fighters, they aimed to emphasize her sex appeal, modelling her breasts after model Fumie Hosokawa, while her hips were based on those of media personality Ai Iijima.[10] During work on The King of Fighters '94, the person working on Mai's sprites, C.A.C Yamaski, asked the development head if he could increase the number of sprites for her standing idle animation.[14][15] The latter agreed due to having extra space on the game's ROM, but was surprised upon seeing the results: while in earlier games her breasts were given a slight amount of jiggle in her animations, the sprite artist had emphasized the movement of her breasts dramatically. While the animation was censored in Western releases of the game, this aspect endured into subsequent titles and the team felt this was a significant factor in her enduring popularity.[14][6]

For her portrayal in The King of Fighters XIII, character artist Ritsu Yamaguchi wanted to recreate the atmosphere of her Fatal Fury series appearances. He noted that while The King of Fighters often placed emphasis on her breasts, hips and buttocks to depict her as a character that exudes sex appeal, he saw her character in Fatal Fury as portrayed "stoic" motions and as a serious fighter even though her clothing was still revealing. He felt her outfit alone would illustrate her sex appeal, so he focused on the stoic aspect to give her a "more sensual atmosphere", downplaying many of her more sexual animations by comparison.[16] Meanwhile, for The King of Fighters Online, Triple A Games CEO Yan Yongjun noted that the development team had trouble implementing Mai in the game, stating that while she was a popular character in Korea and Western countries, they struggled with her "scantily clad" appearance.[17]

Appearances[edit]

Fighting games[edit]

Mai Shiranui was introduced in Fatal Fury 2 as the heir of the Shiranui ninjutsu style, who trained with Andy Bogard as a child and developed romantic feelings for him that persisted into adulthood. In the game, she help Andy to face the new host of The King of Fighters tournament, Wolfgang Krauser. She loses to Laurence Blood, who takes her captive to lure Andy.[18] She also plays a supporting role in Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory and Real Bout Fatal Fury, gathering information to help in the fight against Geese Howard—the criminal who killed Andy and Terry's father, Jeff Bogard.[18] She also appeared in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (1997) and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers (1998), although these games do not have any story line. Mai was added to the roster of Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition (1999), a 3D remake of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters which originally did not feature Mai.

The King of Fighters series tournament features Mai as a regular character participating in the annual tournaments in the Women Fighters Team[19](also known as Fighting Gals Team, and the Gorgeous Team[20]), which she founds in The King of Fighters '94 after Andy refuses to let her enter and form a team with her. Initially, the team is composed of Mai, King and Yuri Sakazaki from the Art of Fighting series, with Mai aiming to help encourage King and her fellow team members and to prove to Andy the error of his ways. In The King of Fighters '99, the teams were expanded to four members, and so Mai goes to the Fatal Fury Team composed of Terry, Andy and Joe, being finally able to join the tournament in the same team as Andy. In the following tournament in The King of Fighters 2000, however, Mai is asked to step out to allow Blue Mary investigate a case. Denied again, she is angered by the request and joins the Women Fighters Team again and has remained a reoccurring member ever since.

Mai eventually leaves the KOF tournament competitions in The King of Fighters XI (2005) to search for Andy who was absent in The King of Fighters 2003 (she appears in KOF XI only as an unlockable character in the PS2 version).[21] In The King of Fighters XII, Mai is completely absent from the game itself (except a mention in Andy's profile) and appears only in the tie-in manga series, even as she has been was "teased" in a trailer and official website, and has been rumored to be added through DLC for the home version.[22][23] In The King of Fighters XIII, Mai returns to the series along with the other two original members of KOF '94's Women's Team.[24][25] Mai returns in The King of Fighters XIV, in which the new character Banderas Hattori is obsessed with her but she is not interested.[26] She reappeared in King of Fighters XV.[27]

Gameplay-wise, Mai is known as a very quick and mobile fighter, however the tradeoff is that she deals limited damage with her attacks. She has been noted as the fastest yet physically weakest fighter in her first game, Fatal Fury 2.[28] In opinion of Super Juegos, "despite her fragile appearance", Mai is one of the more effective contenders in Fatal Fury Special.[29] According to a GamePro guide to Fatal Fury 3, "Mai's excellent speed and air superiority give her an advantage over some fighters, but her moves inflict little damage" and thus Mai players need to constantly keep on attacking their opponents in order to prevail.[30] Furthermore, she might be easy to pick up play for new players, for example having been described as one of the easiest characters to master in Real Bout Fatal Fury by Sega Saturn Magazine.[31] In Dead or Alive, Mai remains a speed type of character who is relatively easy to handle, and as such Famitsu recommended her as a good character for DOA beginners.[32] She furthermore has a variety of hand-to-hand combat maneuvers, such as a diving attack ("Flying Squirrel Dance") and a rushing cartwheel kick followed by an elbow strike ("Deadly Ninja Bees").[33]

Outside the main Fatal Fury / KOF titles, Mai has appeared playable in every game in the SNK vs. Capcom series of crossover fighting games since 1999.[34] She is also playable character in SNK Gals' Fighters (2000)[35] and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (2005),[36] and in a number of SNK mobile fighting games such as The King of Fighters (2003),[37] Fatal Fury Mobile and Garou Densetsu vs Fighter's History Dynamite (2007),[38] The King of Fighters-i (2011),[39] and The King of Fighters D: DyDO Smile STAND (2017).[40] In I.O. Entertainment's free-to-play Lost Saga, Mai is a premium character that was added in both female and male variations, originally in the Japanese version in 2012[41] and for the Chinese and Spanish-language versions in 2015.[42] In 2016, Mai joined the cast of Koei Tecmo's fighting series Dead or Alive via DLC in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round.[43] In the fan service fighting game SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, where she is dressed up as a cow in her default costume,[44] Mai is fighting to be granted a wish to finally marry Andy.[45] She returned to the DOA series as a DLC once more in Dead or Alive 6.[46][47] Mai is set to appear as a playable character in Street Fighter 6 as part of its second season of downloadable content.[48]

Other video games[edit]

Mai is featured as a playable character in the console shooter games KOF Sky Stage (2010)[49][50] and Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting,[51][52] and the quiz game Quiz King of Fighters (1995), also appearing in the 1999-2006 SNK vs. Capcom spin-off crossover card battle series SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash. She additionally appears Bandai Namco's crossover tactical RPG Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos,[53] as well as a gamebook for the Queen's Blade ecchi series.[54]

She is also one of the heroes in the Thailand-exclusive[55] MOBA game The King of Fighters Online.[56][57] In a 2017 MMORPG The King of Fighters: World by Ledo Interactive, Mai is featured in person as a non-player and tutorial character, but the players will be able to use her Shiranui style for their own characters.[58] She was to appear in never released and similarly titled MMO The King of Fighters' World from Shanda Interactive to lead the Ninja Team made of her, Andy, and Eiji Kisaragi.[59]

She features, usually as a playable character, in various non-fighting KOF mobile games either developed or licensed by SNK, including KOF Gals Mahjong,[60] KOF: Battle de Paradise,[61] KOFM for Kakao,[62] Mini King of Fighters,[63] The Rhythm of Fighters,[64] and The King of Fighters M,[65] among many others. Some of them are beat 'em up games, such as The King of Fighters '97 OL (2015)[66] and The King of Fighters: Destiny,[67] or role-playing games, such as The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match Online (a tactical RPG)[68] and The King of Fighters All Star (an action RPG[69] in which up to three various versions of Mai from different other games may appear at once.[70]) She is also featured in augmented reality game The King of Fighters Orochi Go.[71]

Not-strictly Fatal Fury/KOF mobile games that have Mai among characters include SNK Dream Battle,[72] SNK Beach Volley Gal's Attack,[73] SNK Gal's Open: Cutey Shot,[73] SNK Gals Island Dokidoki Puzzle Shock![74] and its sequel,[75] Neo Geo Tennis Coliseum,[76] You Are the Hero!,[77][78] and Dai Shingeki RPG! Sister Quest.[79][80] She is also featured in Samurai Shodown Slash (a beat 'em up crossover of Samurai Shodown and The King of Fighters)[81][82] and in Metal Slug Defense (a tower defense crossover of KOF and Metal Slug),[83][84] as well as in Beast Busters featuring KOF (a mobile remake of SNK's rail shooter Beast Busters, in a nurse outfit).[85]

In the 1998 visual novel game The King of Fighters: Kyo, set in the KOF timeline between The King of Fighters '96 and The King of Fighters '97, Mai is a non-player character who provides the protagonist Kyo Kusanagi with information and help during his trials. In the 2000s dating sim series Days of Memories, Mai Shiranui retains her name and general design but is an otherwise unrelated character with a different role in each game (a rich maiden and protagonist's neighbor in Boku to Kanojo no Atsui Natsu,[86] an office lady by day and a masked ninja vigilante by night in Koi wa Good Job!,[87][88] a popular school beauty and the protagonist's classmate in Kaze Maou Miyako de Tsukamaete!,[89] and a school beauty with strange motives in Sekai de Ichiban Atsui Fuyu.

Mai Shiranui has been furthermore featured as a usually playable guest character in many various video games aimed in mostly East Asian markets, such as Chinese-only dance game Dazzle Dance.[90] To celebrate the 15th anniversary of The King of Fighter in 2009, Mai joined a Chinese MMORPG Yuyan Online.[91] She was added as a player character to a Korean multiplayer beat 'em up Dungeon Fighter Online in 2010,[92] and also joined the character rosters of two more Korean video games: an action game Mad Blade (formerly Bladecraft)[93] and an endless runner Kal Kal Kal All Together in 2013.[94] Mai was featured as an avatar replacement model to promote the Japanese MMORPG Wizardry Online in 2014.[95][96]

Mai has been appearing making guest character appearances in especially many East Asian video games since 2014, when she was added to several Chinese video games, including MOBAs 300 Heroes[97] and The King of Soldier II,[98] an action RPG Ultimate Heroes,[99] beat 'em ups Fantasy Fighter[100] King of Fate, and an RTS Dragon Throne: Battle of Red Cliffs.[101] She was also featured as a variant of character class Kunoichi in Korean MMORPG Black Desert Online to promote it in Japan.[102][103][104] In 2016, Mai was licensed as a bonus character to the highest-grossing video game in the world: Wangzhe Rongyao, roughly translated to English as Honor of Kings, a mobile MOBA developed by TiMi Studio and Tencent,[105][106] where she is a Mage class character,[107] additionally starring in its official tie-in webcomic.[108] She was further included in collaboration events in Brave Frontier,[109] Game of Dice,[110] and Samurai Kingdom.[111]

Mai has appeared in many video games as a collaboration character such as Mabinogi Heroes,[112] Boku to Dragon,[113] Clash of Kings,[114] Crash Fever,[115] Crusaders Quest,[116] GangRoad JOKER,[117] Grand Summoners,[118] Everybody's Marble,[119] If World,[120] Last Senkan,[121] Rival Arena VS,[122] Saishu Senkan: With Lovely Girls,[123] Tower of Saviors,[124] Valkyrie Connect,[125] Venus Eleven Vivid!,[126] World Cross Saga,[127] and Yamato Chronicle.[128] By mid-2018, she has further appeared in more games such as HIT[129] and The Fellowship of The Dragon,[130] also joining Puzzle & Dragons in celebration of the game's fifth anniversary,[131] followed by Dungeon Hunter Champions,[132] Knives Out-Tokyo Royale,[133] Phantasy Star Online 2,[134] Tokyo Prison,[135] and more. In 2024, she appeared as a collaboration character in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.[136]

Mai's image was additionally licensed as a roulette character for pachislot machines.[137][138][139][140][141] In 2003, SNK sued machine manufacturer Aruze for copyright infringement after Mai's and Terry Bogard's likenesses were used without permission for their pachinko game "Iregui".[142] Mai is prominently featured in the Universal Fighting System collectible card game,[143][144] and GungHo Games offered their users a Mai avatar skin.[145]

In other media[edit]

The King of Fighters actress Maggie Q in 2009

Mai Shiranui is a protagonist in the 2009 American live-action film The King of Fighters, which is loosely based on the games.[146] She was played by Maggie Q, who performed her own stunts.[147] Like the other series characters in the film, Mai bears little resemblance to her in-game incarnation, in that she is instead American and an undercover CIA operative and a girlfriend of Iori Yagami.[148][149][150] In the film, Mai fights together with Iori and Kyo to defeat the villain Rugal Bernstein in an alternative dimension.

Mai has made her first anime appearance in Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle (1993), where she follows Andy on his search for Krauser in Germany. She is approached and later attacked by Laurence Blood, but Andy defeats him and rescues her.[151] In Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994), Mai is present with Terry, Andy and Joe when a girl named Sulia gives them the quest to find the Armor of Mars and stop her brother Laocorn Gaudeamus. After the villain Hauer Blitzer fails to seduce Mai, he takes her prisoner after a fight, but she is again saved by Andy. Mai then defeats her rival Panni and participates in the final battle against her childhood best friend Laocorn, which ends with Laocorn dying to save her from the god of war, Mars.[152]

Mai has only a minor role in the first episode of original net animation The King of Fighters: Another Day (2005), voiced by Akoya Sogi and Sheryl Stanley, wherein she and Athena Asamiya save Soiree Meira and a little girl from a collapsing building in USA. She is more prominent in YouTube animated series The King of Fighters: Destiny (2017), voiced by Ami Koshimizu. In KOF: Destiny, after beating up some lecherous punks in London, Mai joins up with Yuri and King, as the leader of their new Queens Team to "let men know that women are the ones who rule the world".[153] She quarrels with Andy when Benimaru tries to use this to seduce her,[154] and joins the King of Fighters tournament hoping to face Andy in the finals.[155] Before that can happen, however, Mai and her teammates come under control of Rugal Bernstein's evil power, making them attack the Fatal Fury Team.[156][157] Andy is forced to fight and defeat her,[158] after which she comes back to her senses to witness the final fight between Rugal and Kyo.[159]

In audio media, Mai appears in Dengeki G's Magazine drama CD series for Fatal Fury, where she is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara.[160] In 1994, Japanese idol Reiko Chiba performed a vocal track as Mai for her music single Non Stop! One Way Love, cosplaying as the character to promote it.[5] Meanwhile, Akoya Sogi appeared as part of "NEO・GEO DJ Station Live '99", an audio comedy stage performance performed in Shinjuku, Tokyo that was later released on laserdisc and CD as a two-disc set.[161]

Promotion and merchandise[edit]

Mai has been used extensively by SNK to promote their games, other products, and the company as a whole. She was featured in live-action television commercials for Fatal Fury Special and Fatal Fury 2 in 1993.[162] Multiple "booth babe" models dressed as the character have been fixtures at Tokyo Game Show and other venues, noted in particular for their popularity at such events.[163] Various Asian celebrities have also been hired to promote the character, such as Korean idol Kyungri of the band Nine Muses,[164] Chinese actress Li Bingbing,[165] and Japanese adult actress Kirara Asuka.[166] Meanwhile, a 2005 fan-voted "Ultimate Mai Shiranui Cosplay Tournament" promotional event in Taiwan exhibited nearly a hundred women who dressed up as Mai.[167]

She has also been the focus of other SNK promotions, such as artist Falcoon signing limited edition posters of Mai at E3 2005.[168] Mai was featured heavily in promotional materials for The King of Fighters XIII,[169] and an exclusive t-shirt depicting her was given to all registered participants in the King of Fighters championship at EVO 2012.[170] The King of Fighters XIV Premium Edition included a soundtrack with an illustrated case featuring the character,[171] and the game's pre-order bonuses included a Mai PlayStation 4 theme.[172] Mai was also announced to join the roster of the mobile action RPG SNK All-Star if the number of pre-registered users exceeds half million.[173] A variety of merchandise was also produced to promote her appearance in SNK Heroines, including a t-shirt, standees and stickers bundled with special editions of the game.[174][175]

A variety of figures have also been produced of the character by manufacturers such as A-Label,[176] Aizu Project,[177] Alphamax,[178] Daiki,[179] Gantaku,[180] Hobby Japan,[181] Kinetiquettes,[182] Max Factory,[183] Volks,[184] and SNK themselves.[185] In 2009, an exclusive Volks figure was sold in an auction for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.[186] Other figures have also been produced including those for the Cy Girls series,[187] Pinky:St,[188] and Nendoroid.[189] Meanwhile in other merchandise, Exar produced a joystick controller modeled after the Neo Geo's for PlayStation consoles, decorated with Mai-related imagery.[190] In 2019, an entirely Mai-themed Neo-Geo shop opened in Tokyo's Akihabara district for a limited time to celebrate the character's in-universe birthday.[191]

Critical reception[edit]

Media reception and later games have depicted the characters Chun-Li (left) and Mai as rivals. This image, created for SNK vs. Capcom, has also been frequently cosplayed.[192]

Mai has been well received since her introduction. The staff of UGO.com described her as a mascot not only for The King of Fighters but SNK as a whole, and felt the character's role as an "unapologetic sex symbol" was a driving force for sales of the King of Fighters franchise.[193] The Mary Sue's Princess Weekees meanwhile cited her as one of the most iconic women in fighting games, noting that while SNK's games themselves were often overlooked in the mainstream, people including herself knew about Mai thanks to her sex appeal.[194] Joystiq's Richard Michtell meanwhile emphasized the character's presence in SNK's work over their competitor Capcom's stating "there's one thing Street Fighter will never have, and that's Mai."[195] Her omission from The King of Fighters XII drew particular backlash, with players boycotting the game and coining the phrase "no Mai, no buy".[196][197] James Stephanie Sterling in an article for Destructoid in particular criticized her absence from the game, comparing it to Capcom "releasing Street Fighter without Ryu".[198]

Other outlets meanwhile compared Mai to Street Fighter character Chun-Li, as both have been cited as the first two prominent female characters of fighting games.[199][200][201] Frederick Badlissi of Diehard GameFan jokingly called it the "question of 'anatomic supremacy' between Mai Shiranui’s breasts (the 'North') and Chun-Li’s thighs (the 'South')".[202] Games Tribune Magazine writer Javier Bello felt the comparison was in part due to the visual appeal of both characters introducing "a sexy and pleasing touch to the eye" in contrast to a cast of "squads of fighters with plenty of testosterone and muscles", with Mai's emphasis on exposure pushing her popularity further in his opinion.[203] French magazine Hardcore Gamers devoted a two-page spread to the characters to compare them, with the article emphasizing while Chun-Li was often the more interesting character, Mai was more consistently alluring, though no less influential on other characters in the fighting game industry.[204]

In regards to her appearance in Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, Jean-Karlo Lemus and Heidi Kemps of Anime News Network noted the emphasis on fanservice, particularly with how she was introduced "boobs first" in the production. She compared it to her portrayal in the Fatal Fury 2 video game, and observed while her appearance in the game was attractive, she was not "as over-the-top as she eventually became" in her later King of Fighters '94 appearance. Kemps felt the anime's portrayal of Mai affected public perception and led to her later more sexualized appearance and Lemus agreed, feeling elements anime character designer Masami Ōbari had inserted into the film focusing on sexuality supported this theory.[205] The observation was shared by the staff of Game On! USA, who praised Obari's anatomical detail in the film and stated he "made Mai Shinarui the crazy underdressed heroine she is today".[206]

Gavin Jasper stated while focus was often placed on her breasts, he felt her "optimistic spirit helps balance her into a fun character who is always a blast to play as". He further praised how she owned her sexuality, integrating her sex appeal as an intentional part of her character's battle strategy. Jasper also added that while she is often portrayed as chasing after Andy, he liked that she was not content with simply being a side character and someone that deserved to be his partner over other characters, her role in The King of Fighters' Women's Team "ultimately her way of showing him up and teaching him a lesson."[207] Meanwhile, the staff of Chinese website 163.com noted that while the King of Fighters series later introduced sexier characters, they were often ignored in part thanks to Mai's "exaggerated style" and personality, the latter of which they felt was vital for a character's enduring appeal.[208]

However, some have complained about her design, feeling it represents a trend of oversexualization of female characters in fighting games. A thesis for the Federal University of Bahia cited Mai as an example of how female fighting game characters hypersexualize the breasts and hips, drawing comparisons to portrayal of the mythological Venus. It additionally cited her as an example of how such games tend to portray Asian women as inherently sexual through their use of traditional clothing and how much of her body it exposes.[209]

Cultural impact[edit]

A fan cosplaying as Mai

The animation of Mai's breasts in Fatal Fury 2 has been cited as one of the earliest examples of breast physics in video games, a conception that later games have steadily tried to refine,[6][210] thought Mai has remained the most prominent example in 2D animation of the concept.[211] Brett Elston of GamesRadar+ emphasized that while female fighting game characters were prominent in the 1990's, with each new game often trying to out-sexualize the others, gaming periodicals were "abuzz with commentary on what Mai's bobbing bosom meant for the industry", with Elston comparing it to "witnessing (half-naked) women entering the workplace for the first time."[212] The staff of Inside Games praised it as "80% of Mai Shiranui's charm" and an enduring aspect of her character, citing how it fit as a distractionary element of her role as a ninja that was refined to be more realistic as the series progressed.[213]

Mai has been cited as especially popular among the young people in Hong Kong during the late 1990s, impacting local youth and Mong Kok culture in the country.[214] Mai has also been cited as one of the most popular subjects of cosplay worldwide,[215] appearing on televised material such China's Cybernet television broadcast, where the host cosplayed as the character several times.[216][217] In an interview with Dead or Alive developer Team Ninja, they stated their character Momiji's red clothing and ability to shoot fire was a direct homage to Mai.[218] Mai has also been the frequent subject of explicit third party works, including hentai doujinshi,[204] erotic cosplay,[219] and pornographic films.[220]

Mai's outfit has been observed as particularly popular among models in Chila and Taiwan, with models wearing the attire appearing at non-gaming events such as book signings or car shows.[221] The outfit has also appeared in film, such as 2018's Swordsman: The Gambling World of Fun (Chinese: 笑傲赌界) where it is worn by one of the movie's antagonists.[222][223] Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft attributed its popularity to the outfit's simplicity rather than any correlation to the King of Fighters, with the attire acting as a "uniform of sorts" as an "easy go-to choice" for cosplay.[221] In contrast, Singaporean pop-culture site Lollipop felt the outfit demanded "a special kind of physique", and felt this to why it was popular with models.[224]

In 2019, when discussing Terry Bogard's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, producer Masahiro Sakurai explained while Mai was widely popular, she would not be able to appear in the game in any context as the game was made for "good boys and girls of many different ages." The statement rapidly became a meme on social media platforms, with Team Ninja taking the opportunity to advertise her inclusion in Dead or Alive 5 and to welcome players to "the world of adults".[225] The development team later clarified it was out of concern that her presence would increase the game's age rating.[226] The decision still led some to question the exclusion in light of explicit characters such as Bayonetta appearing in the title, with Inside Games joking perhaps Mai was "too big" for the title and suggesting it only added to her appeal.[213]
