Lázaro: Given name or surname?[edit]

I was told that Lázaro was the first of his two surnames, but since it looks like a given name there could be confusion on this point. The article calls him both "Carreter" and "Lázaro Carreter", which only feeds the confusion. Can someone with knowledge make it clear in the article how to parse his name?
