Tech News: 2024-20[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN linktarget
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [9][10]

Tech News: 2024-21[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [11]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [12][13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [14][15]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

sockpuppet template[edit]
Hi Dreamy Jazz, Hope you're well,
I've added the sock template to the userpages of New yorker jounlaist , Wikipedianjo, Skymansky3 as these have been globally-locked for being علي أبو عمر socks but I don't know if these would still be under proven or suspected?,
Thought I should ask incase I've tagged these under the wrong one (proven/suspected), Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 09:13, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- In general, sock tags are added after cases at WP:SPI so sometimes tagging socks that have been globally locked but then not reported at enwiki may not be necessary (especially for cases where the user creates accounts frequently). In this case, as they are globally locked for socking you might as well add the tags. I would suggest that in general if you are unsure you tag as suspected (absent a WP:SPI case or a CU giving some kind of result). Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 16:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Deleted Content Needs Restoring[edit]
Good morning - I recently updated the Sun Capital Partners page (it took me hours, because I'm brand new) and I was flagged by an editor who expressed I might have a conflict of interest, and the page was deleted. I would love to have that page or that content restored somewhere. Like I mentioned, I'm more or less new to longer edits, and I also spent several hours reading through the edit guides. After so much effort, simply to fix some issues, I'm crushed that I would be deleted. My edits came about because the original was sloppy, and I could not get information. It kills me when wiki sites are not "clean" and updated. Anyway, can you help? Bradrhoads (talk) 01:03, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- "Sun Capital is an experienced private equity firm driven by operational expertise....It partners with small and medium-sized enterprise founders and management teams to provide the resources and support needed to optimize operations for enhanced efficiency and sustainable growth....By supporting innovative non-profit organizations, the Foundation aims to fulfill its mission of promoting sustainable, positive change" followed by a list of inline URLs to the company web pages. Bradrhoads, you really need to come clean about that COI in regards to Marc Leder. Drmies (talk) 01:07, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- Wow. This is profoundly disheartening. Is this normal? Guys - I'm BRAND NEW. I read through the material offered up and I tried to help. I came to the Leder page because I'm a fan of the Washington Commanders, who was acquired by a group including Leder, and it was just a hit job, top to bottom, talking about sex parties, mistresses, details of his divorce - read it if it still exists. I feel like my edits neutralized it and corrected and obvious attack on the page. But now I'M being called out? @Drmies I think your tone is personal. This is just someone bigfooting who gets to play in the sandbox. Can anyone at all help me? Please read the orignal and my edits, and tell me which is better, and mentor me on how to fix it. Contentious topic/question[edit]
Hello Dreamy Jazz,
You created the page Wikipedia:Contentious_topics/India,_Pakistan,_and_Afghanistan and I thought I could ask you to clarify something. What is the scope of this topic: every topic related to any of the 3 countries (be it about food, entertainment and so on) or just the topics relating to the relations between them ("+/and" being a key component of the definition of the topic)? Asking this because I don't agree with the the interpretation of the page made by User:Saqib here. Thank you in advance. If you think I should ask elsewhere, please let me know. Best, -My, oh my! (Mushy Yank) 17:41, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- The interpretation by Saqib is correct. It applies to any page related to any of these countries whether or not the topic is related to more than one of these countries. For example, Talk:India and Talk:20 October 2017 Afghanistan attacks are tagged as being covered by this contentious topic designation, but are only related to one of the countries. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 17:52, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- Not related to India/Pakistan but Hummus is protected is due to Israel/Palestine for example. S0091 (talk) 17:57, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks both! I stand corrected. My apologies for the trouble. -My, oh my! (Mushy Yank) 18:18, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 22:52, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
- In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
- Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes:
.collapsible
,.multicol
,.reflist
,.coordinates
,.topicon
. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar). [16][17]
- When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [18]
