The 2013–14 Hertha BSC season was the 121st season in club history.

Background[edit]

Hertha won the 2012–13 2. Bundesliga,[1] therefore securing promotion for the 2013–14 Bundesliga. The club's pre-season began on 23 June,[2] with 500 fans showing up to the first pre-season training session.[2]

For the season, Hertha signed Hajime Hosogai,[3] Alexander Baumjohann,[4] Sebastian Langkamp, and[5] Johannes van den Bergh.[6] Hertha also brought in on loan Per Ciljan Skjelbred and Tolga Ciğerci.[7] Alfredo Morales,[8] Marvin Knoll,[9][10] Shervin Radjabali-Fardi,[11] Daniel Beichler,[12] Marco Djuricin,[13] Roman Hubník[14] all departed Hertha, while Felix Bastians was loaned out.[15]

Bundesliga review[edit]

Hertha began their Bundesliga campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt on 10 August.[20] Hertha BSC won 6–1.[20] Adrián Ramos, John Brooks, Sami Allagui and Ronny scored for Hertha;[20] Ramos and Allagui scored two goals each.[20] Alexander Meier scored for Eintracht.[20] Hertha finished the matchday in first place.[21] Hertha then faced 1. FC Nürnberg on 18 August on matchday two of the Bundesliga,[22] with the match ending in a 2–2 draw.[22] Allagui and Ronny scored for Hertha,[22] while Josip Drmić and Hiroshi Kiyotake scored for Nürnberg.[22] Hertha finished the matchday in sixth place.[23] Hertha then faced Hamburger SV on matchday three, on 24 August,[24] where Hertha won 1–0 through a Ramos goal.[24] Hertha finished the matchday in fifth place.[25] Hertha finished August with matchday four on 31 August against VfL Wolfsburg,[26] falling 2–0 through Ivica Olić and Diego goals for Wolfsburg.[26] Hertha ended August in sixth place.[27]

DFB–Pokal[edit]

DFB–Pokal review[edit]

The draw for the first round of the DFB-Pokal occurred on 15 June.[73] Hertha was drawn against VfR Neumünster.[73] The match took place on 4 August and Hertha BSC won 3–2 in extra time.[74] Änis Ben-Hatira (2) and Sami Allagui scored for Hertha.[74] Harrer and Kramer scored for Neumünster.[74] The draw for the second round of the DFB-Pokal occurred on 10 August.[75] Hertha were drawn against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.[75] The match took place on 25 September,[76] where Kaiserslautern won 3–1, eliminating Hertha from the competition.[76] Peter Niemeyer scored for Hertha,[76] while Mohammadou Idrissou, Karim Matmour and Olivier Occéan scored for Kaiserslautern.[76]
