Agony is a Colombian Extreme metal band, that was formed in Bogotá in 1993 by guitarist Andrés Jaramillo and drummer Alfonso Pinzón. They quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the most influential and historically significant bands in the country.[1]

History[edit]

Agony was founded in 1993 by two college mates, Andrés Jaramillo and Alfonso Pinzón, who also recruited two additional members from their college. The band then held auditions, and Ernesto Velasco joined as the lead singer, completing the lineup that recorded the band’s self-titled demo tape in 1994.

At the end of 1994, the band reformed, bringing in guitarist Carlos Marin and vocalist Cesar Botero. This new lineup recorded the concert album “Live All the Time”[2]in 1995, which became the first live metal album ever released in the country[3]. That same year, Agony headlined the inaugural edition of the Bogotá rock festival Rock al Parque.[4]

Agony's first studio album, titled “Millennium”[5], was released in 1996 and featured new bassist Carlos Reyes. The album received widespread acclaim for its innovative approach to thrash metal and significantly contributed to the band's rising profile. In 1999, the band relocated to Los Angeles, California. Shortly thereafter, Reyes left the band and was briefly replaced by Juanes, who played shows with them at the legendary Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Agony's second studio album, “Reborn”, was released in 2002, after which Botero departed, and the group went on hiatus. In 2004, Jaramillo and Pinzón formed the Los Angeles metal band Dia de los Muertos. In 2006, Agony reissued their 1996 album, “Millennium”[6], which has been reissued several times since then. A year later, they headlined Rock al Parque in Colombia for the fifth time.[7]

The band's third album, “The Devil's Breath”, featuring Cello Dias on bass, was released in 2009.[8] [9]
