BoxWise

BoxWise is a UK-based non-profit social enterprise helping young people make successful transitions to adult through boxing.[1][2] The organisation was founded in 2020 by Nick Maughan and Rick Ogden.[3][4]

History[edit]

BoxWise has 42 venues in locations including Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, East Middlesbrough, Telford as well as disability boxing centres in Manchester, Pembrokeshire, and Sheffield.[5] The non-profit has also expanded internationally in South Africa, Uganda and Ireland.[6]

Activities[edit]

BoxWise supports young people to develop essential life skills. The free 10-week program is delivered by accredited England boxing coaches.[7] Beneficiaries have the opportunity to gain a Level 1 Coaching Qualification or be involved in mentoring other young people on future courses.[8]

BoxWise is partnered with the non-profit Street Doctors, which empowers young people affected by violence. Street Doctors offer emergency first-aid training.[9][10]

The organisation runs specialised programmes to support young Ukrainian refugees’ transition to life in the UK.[11]

The disability programme in partnership with the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Amateur Boxing Club, Luiz Faye's Kronik Warrior organization and the Mary Hare School is adjusted to suit individual needs and fitness abilities.[12]

Other programmes include: programme for young people who are supported by Centrepoint, Veterans programme,[13] women's programme and disability programmes.[14]

BoxWise's advisory board includes Crossbench Member of the House of Lords Lord St. John of Bletso,[15] partner and Head of Purpose at law firm Mischon de Reya LLP Alexander Rhodes, professional boxer Hannah Rankin, ex-England Rugby player Floyd Steadman, former Chairman of England Boxing Caspar Hobbs, CEO of the Centre for Social Justice Andy Cooke[16] and English Boxing manager and promoter Frank Warren.[17]

Ambassadors include Olympic Bronze medallist Joshua Buatsi, WBO World Cruiserweight Title winner Lawrence Okolie, entrepreneur Ayo Gordon, British former professional boxer Anthony Crolla and super lightweight division boxer Harlem Eubank.[18]
