History[edit]

The area in what is known as Cass today was first settled in the early 1890s when the Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway built a track through the area. A post office was established in March of 1894 and remained in operation until 1928. It was originally called Sheffield, but the name was changed to Cass in 1896. Only the post office and a general store were in Cass that year. In 1914, it had 100 residents served by two stores and gins. The population dipped to 20 in 1925. It then went up to 40 in 1964 and had no businesses in operation. There was a town hall, a church, and two businesses serving 50 people in 1983 and remained there in 1990. It went up to 60 in 2000.[2] It was said to have anticipated a future in steel manufacturing.[3]
