This should be changed - to 'Canadian King's Counsel'.[edit]

This should be changed to 'Canadian King's Counsel', as Queen Elizabeth II has now been succeeded by King Charles III. 2406:E003:E1E:1701:7910:5E39:1B52:7B25 (talk) 23:46, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to have this re-considered, in part. The practice is that if you have a QC and you died before the Queen, you remain a QC on any articles, cases, etc. It's a bit jarring to see well-known lawyers from the Victoria era or the second Elizabethan era categorised as "King's Counsel". I would suggest instead a sub-category of "Canadian Queen's Counsel", within the "Canadian King's counsel" category, since that KC category is the one that now will grow and the QC one is static. It would be a major job then to change the category for Canadian lawyers who died while a QC, but it could be done page by page. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 23:10, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My preference would be "Canadian King's and Queen's Counsel". A KC/QC category subdivision would have the effect of seperating out those who held the honour solely during the reigns of Victoria or Elizabeth II. I don't think that would be useful.--Trystan (talk) 03:57, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such title as "Canadian King's and Queen's Counsel", nor "KC/QC" as a postnominal honorific, and Wikipedia should not invent them. At the root of it, the Canadian King's or Queen's Counsel is one honorary title which changes its name depending on the gender of the current Sovereign, and all holders of the title ought to be categorized together, unless we are going to subcategorize them by which Monarch(s?) they were appointed under. Also, there was a pronouncement (a tweet, but we've used it as a reference) upon Elizabeth II's death that all holders of the QC title immediately changed to KC, and that this was a provision in the Demise of the Crown Act 1901 and so it would seem also applies to QCs appointed by Victoria. Having Category:Canadian Queen's Council as a redirect to this category is how we would typically address this sort of thing, and I don't see a reason to depart from that practice here. At least the next two heirs apparent are male, so it seems this won't be an issue again probably for decades. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 13:10, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
