Fjords cat vs coast cat

Most of the fjord/sound/inlet articles contained here also are in the Category:Fjords of British Columbia. Originally I had placed the entire Category:Fjords of British Columbia into this 'Coast' cat, but reconsidered, because fjords should stand on their own as a geographical feature of he province, rather than being slotted in a sub-cat of Category:Geographic regions of British Columbia, which this is. Therefore, the categories are not redundant, but as needed (and providing they're not freshwater fjords that are in the Kootenays, for example) fjords fall into each cat on their own merit..--Keefer4 | Talk 10:41, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm wondering if a term like Category:Freshwater Fords in British Columbia or Category:Fjord lakes in British Columbia isn't appropriate; and not all are in the Interior - the coast is FULL of freshwater lakes that, but for a few feet of elevation, would be inlets; Owekeeno Lake the most obvious example. I'm wondering if on the fjord page there's a discussion of any terms applicable to freshwater bodies; which I'd expect given the existence of such lakes in Norway and Sweden, and also of course in Switzerland; all of Lac Leman/Lake Geneva, Lake Constance, Lago di Como, Lago di Locarno etc are all fjords...just not saltwater ones leading to the open sea, with their terminal moraines generally not submerged also (it's the moraines which help cause the skookumchucks, which no doubt there's a special Norwegian word for the similar kind of thing in Norway, now that I think about it; I'll ask somewhere.Skookum1 00:37, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Also recommend Category:Hydroelectric reservoirs in British Columbia as a subcat of Category:Lake in British Columbia; Williston, Ootsa, Stave, Seton, Carpenter, Clowhom, Buntzen, Alouette, Arrow, Duncan....needless to say it's a huge list and a major cat; some kind of designation for those that were natural lakes before might be good, but tricky to label (Stave, Seton and Arrow all existed before inundation, for example). I'd imagine that whatever Category:Dams in British Columbia is or woudl be a subcat of Category:Hydroelectric developments in Canada (??) or whatever; Category:Dams in Canada exists, but I don't think we've pared away Category:Dams in British Columbia, which as noted, again, shoudl be parallel to reservoirs as sharing a parent cat with the Dams cat.Skookum1 00:42, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

And in industrial-cat terms, remebmer that the hydro categories are themselves subcats of "power developments" I'd think, if there's a collective cat/hierarchy for power generation, because of everything from the Hat Creek proposal to the Burrard Thermal to the oil-fired generatin station in Boston Bar....Skookum1 00:43, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Subcat discussion/parameters

I just created the Central Coast of British Columbia category and sorted various items in the Coast cat properly. Upcoming will be Category:South Coast of British Columbia, where the Category:Lower Mainland and Category:Sunshine Coast and Category:Sea to Sky Country will all be subcats, plus once-created Category:Southern Vancouver Island and Category:West Coast of Vancouver Island; the other VI subcat will be Category:Northern Vancouver Island ("North Island" is what we usually say, but "North Vancouver Island" doesn't sound right, although the government tourism ministry's branding consultants are trying to push that lately....), but it's a subcat of Category:Central Coast of British Columbia. Division points for Central Coast are Campbell River-Discovery Islands (which can be in both Central Coast and the southward cat from there...have to name that, "Mid-Island" isn't quite right, means more Nanaimo-Ladysmith-Parksville than Courtenay-Campbell River but "Southern" will do for now; thinking that Category:Gulf of Georgia would be useful, with the Southern VI cat, Sunshine Coast and other lower-coast mainland cats (Sea to Sky, Vancouver's, Lower Mainland, Gulf Islands) fitting in well; yeah I'm gonna do it, name is worth enshrining and spans the rest of teh South Coast.....Central/North dividing line is somewhere between Bella Bella and Kitasoo; Kitasoo I've put in both North and Central Coast cats....geographic paramters are Dean Channel and southwards are Central Coast, Gardner Canal/Hartley Bay is North Coast....changes/edits to suit coming to British Columbia Coast article - which, although I created it, really shouldbe Coast of British Columbia (and there needs to be a Pacific Northwest Coast article....Skookum1 (talk) 18:42, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
