Criteria for inclusion in this category - by-elections before 1965[edit]

In relations to a discussion I started at Talk:1923 Mitcham by-election, I have some concerns about including by-elections that took place prior to 1965 in this category. There was no London Borough of Merton prior to its creation during the creation of Greater London in the 1960s and it did not formally exist as a legal entity until April 1965. The Borough included a number of communities which had up to that point been part of the County of Surrey and were certainly not considered part of London. An additional complication is that the Mitcham constituency included not only the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, but also places like Carshalton which are now in the London Borough of Sutton and have never been in Merton. This is similar to the concerns I have raised at Category talk:Elections in the London Borough of Newham. Dunarc (talk) 14:36, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
