Missing characters

I'm worried that prominent female characters in video games are left out of this classification, which makes it harder to find them. The current criteria to include only non-franchise characters with Wikipedia articles dedicated to them will necessarily create an arbitrary partial coverage, regardless of their notability or that of the video-games in which they appear.

I propose the creation of subcategories or lists for Video games with female playable characters and Video games with female main characters. This way the interested reader would have a way to find the video game appearances of characters like Trinity in The Matrix: Path of Neo, Yorda from Ico or Amaterasu Omikami from Ōkami. These lists are in the spirit of List of female action heroes#Video games but more exhaustive.

To avoid excessive growth of those lists, the first one could be restricted to predefined playable characters that are not part of a run-of-the-mill cast (where the only differences between characters are in their visual representation or statistics); and the second list to characters that are relevant to the plot. This way the lists would not need to include every RPG, fighting game or game with configurable characters, only those where the female character has a defined personality - as referenced by reliable sources, to have a clear inclusion criteria. In the case that the lists grew too long they could be split into sub-lists by relevant categories.

Categorization of female characters by role

I'm suggesting at Talk:Portrayal of women in video games#What to do about lists of characters? a new classification of female video game characters by role along the lines of NPC, PC and Protagonist. How is the best way to create that classification, as lists of characters or as subcategories of this one? Diego (talk) 12:23, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
