merge to 'German Americans' category?[edit]

Don't all members of this category meet the criteria to be directly in the Category:German American? If not, why not? Hmains (talk) 05:28, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No they do not. Someone could be an immigrant, but never become an American citizen. So, this category is a subset of German Americans, right? Hmains (talk) 03:00, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bad grammar[edit]

Should this stay 1 cat[edit]

At present this is headed towards having 4 groups.

1-nationals and citizens of post-reunification German Federal Republic who came to the United States.

2-people who were nationals of a Germany, but we are not sure when they emigrated.

3-people who left Germany after we could say it was Nazi Germany but before it became East and West Germany.

4-People who emigrated from some state that is considered to be part of "Germany", 1806-1871, in the cases where our articles and or sourcing do not make the starting state clear.

5.People who were ethnically German, are said to be German by origin, but were nationals of somewhere that was not Germany, but the article or sourcing obscures that fact.

We still have some of the following but I am working to remove it. Due to other factors I am not able to remove all, so some may remain unless someone else does edits or what I am allowed to edit changes.

6-emigrants from the Holy Roman Empire

7-Emigrants from known states 1806-1871, placed in Prussian, Bavarian, Kingdom of Saxony, etc

8- emigrants from the German Empire

9-emigrants from the Weimar Republic

10-emigrants from Nazi Germany

11-emigrants from East Germany

12-emigrants from West Germany.

It seems odd to have 1 category for 1-5 when 6-12 are seperate, but I am not sure of any goid names to use to seperate out 1-5. Any thpughts on this would be appreciated.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:50, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

After creating more sub-cats, this category now only contains the following groups directly,

1- nationals of Germany were are not sure when they emigrated 2- People who I cannot edit the article because of other restrictions, and so remain here. 3- in theory we have articles on people who emigrated from 1806 when the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved, to 1815, when the German Confederation was actually formed, who we do not have a sub-cat for, who we do not have a state sub-cat to place them in, or who emigrated from the Confederation of the Rhine or another state during that time that we lack a state category for, but I am not sure there are many articles on people who emigrated 1806-1815.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:26, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like anyone who was not leaving areas that were under French control, who would be a French emigrant, or the Kingdom of Prussia, or Denmark, who would be a Danish emigrant, was at least from 1811-1815 and maybe earlier leaving the Confederation of the Rhine. So we maybe should create Category:Emigrants from the Confederation of the Rhine to the United States.
