Renaming[edit]

@Pppery: regarding your renaming, shouldn't we do Category:Pages using infobox speedway rider with unknown parameters? (lowercase speedway as well) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:01, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, or at least that's not the convention in Category:Unknown parameters. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:02, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Pppery: wait so I'm confused... What is the convention you are trying to follow? I'm happy either way, but can you document the convention? I.E. something like "categories for infoboxes should follow the pattern where {{infobox foo bar}} has a tracking category Category:Pages using infobox foo bar with unknown parameters where foo and bar match the capitalization of the template, but infobox is lowercase"? To be clear, I'm totally fine with whatever convention you are trying to enforce, I'm just confused by what that convention actually is... --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:05, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Pppery: please also take a look at @Frietjes:'s script for adding a check for unknown parameters (User:Frietjes/addcheckforunknownparameters.js). A lot of people use this to add the check so lets make sure that the convention works with her script. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:07, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The convention I'm trying to enforce is "pages using {{lcfirst:<Template name>}}", or in less technical terms: follow the capitalization of the template name, except for the first letter, which is lowercase, which seems to be what the majority of categories are titled. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:08, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Pppery In this case, the template is {{Infobox speedway rider}} so lc is obvious. ({{Infobox Speedway rider}} is a redirect).
BTW, could it be this one is accidentaly missing in Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Current_requests? -DePiep (talk) 21:13, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm still in the process of typing out my request to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy, so of course it isn't there yet. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:15, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Pppery: I agree that "seems to be what the majority of categories are titled" but this isn't documented anywhere. My suggestion is to open up a WP:RfC. I want to be clear here, I 100% support what you are trying to accomplish here and will be the first to jump in and help, I just want to make sure it is done the right way so that we reduce problems down the road. I'm sure DePiep will agree. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:15, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like I've caused a bit of a mess here: I edit conflicted with you opposing my first batch of nominations when adding my second batch, which I then decided to go through with anyway rather than reverting about 30 edits that added the tags. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:27, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It should be renamed to Category:Pages using infobox speedway rider with unknown parameters. Frietjes (talk) 21:34, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I'd say: get on with this proposal set (now ~12 proposed), align all in Category:Unknown parameters (271). Then also start the RfC/CfD for the standard (especially: enforce the uppercase initial letter). If accepted, we'l l need to change all 500+. IOW, these 12 are not the spoilers nor the blockers.
Uppercase initial would remove inconsistency (today, {{WikiProject Biography}} does keep its initial: Category:Pages using WikiProject Biography with unknown parameters). Also, it allows automation (possible exception: eg, "eBay"?). Recently, I started thinking about adding this category to {{Documentation/link box}} using an #ifexist -- which better has automated naming pattern. -DePiep (talk) 21:35, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"WikiProject" is capitalized in the middle of a sentence. "Infobox" is not. That is why it is uppercase. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:36, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is a page title, even in the middle of a sentence. - DePiep (talk) 21:39, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Frietjes, what do you think about using uppercase initial letter? Makes sense IMO, for example wrt a WikiProject ... example. -DePiep (talk) 21:39, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
for WikiProject, yes capitalised, for infobox no. Frietjes (talk) 21:41, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Weird to automate. It's the name of a page (tempalte). -DePiep (talk) 22:01, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to duck out of this one. I have no real opinion on whether to capitalize or not. My thing is lets make it consistent and document it. @Pppery: once there is a page documenting the standard, there will be no need to even bother speedy renaming. You can just change the templates and retarget the categories. BUT, lets get the documentation in place first. I commend you for taking on this task!! Definitely something that needs to be cleaned up. Please don't hesitate to {{ping}} me if I can be helpful! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:52, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Zackmann08. here you oppose the first batch. I added support [1]. Before ducking out, could you take another look if you still oppose that one? The uc/lc issue remains to be discussed as we desire. -DePiep (talk) 07:11, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Category:Pages using infobox speedway rider with unknown parameters (0) has been createdby Frietjes, before the 48h window elapsed. -DePiep (talk) 07:43, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated my opposition. Again, I support the end goal, just oppose doing it as a speedy rename WITHOUT a documented convention. Once there is a documented convention, I withdraw my opposition. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:46, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
the number of pages in Special:PrefixIndex/Category:Pages using infobox vs. Special:PrefixIndex/Category:Pages using Infobox seems to indicate a convention. I'm not sure where you would document it. clearly "Pages using Infobox Speedyway rider with unknown parameters" is wrong since the template isn't "Infobox Speedyway rider". Frietjes (talk) 20:24, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes makes a good point. Question... Where is the best place to document this convention? Should we just put it on Category:Unknown parameters? Does it need a WP page? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:32, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes should not have move the category at all. Not good. No need to discuss afterwards etc. etc. -DePiep (talk) 22:34, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't move the category, I created a new one when I regenerated the list of known parameters. I agree that there is nothing left to discuss on this talk page. Frietjes (talk) 11:40, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Evading the issue twice: no need to distract into "did not move", and nothing left to discuss on this talk page is not what I wrote about. I explicitly mentioned the <48h "move" you made. -DePiep (talk) 11:43, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
