WANA LOCATION
Picture Scouts Camp, Central Mosque and Wana City Area

Wana is the Head Quarter of South Waziristan Agency located at a distance of about 35 km in the east of Pak Afghan border, the Durand Line. It is a plan valley 20 km long and 13 km broad encircled by snowy mountains of Sarwar Gul, Momin in the west and Janimela and Kot Kor in the north with different heights from 7000 feet to about 10,000 feet. The elevation of the valley varies from 5780 to 4300 feet. A strong and fortificated cantonment was built by British Empire in the center of the valley in the first quarter of 20th century as a continuation of “The Forward Policy” to defend India against Russian’s aggression as they were the two main players of “The Great Game” at that time. Jamia Dar-ul-Uloom Waziristan is located in front of this cantonment at a distance of about 500 feet in the defence area, obtained on lease in 1968. The main object of the establishment of this institution was to spread the light of knowledge in this far off mountainous backward area. It is situated in a shape of a belt 1000X120 feet along Kari Kot road. WANA HISTORICAL BACK GROUND Waziristan has always been remained very troublesome and sensitive area through administrative point of view in the whole tribal belt since the beginning of the great Mughal Empire up to the present age due to the warrior nature of inhabitants and specific geographical situation of the area. No foreign invader had entered Wana up to 1893. In 1893, the british army came to Wana for demarcation of Durand Line but it was severely over ran by Mahsud and Shakai Wazir Tribes under the leadership of Mullah Pawindah and Mullah Humzullah. Mullah Pawindah was called Badshah-e-Taliban (king of the seekers)at that time. Since then, Waziristan came in to the highlights of british media and remained till 1947. Olf Cairo called these people The King Makers” because they attacked Kabul on the request of Nadir Khan, conquered it, killed Baccha Saqqah and announced Nadir Khan as the new king of Afghanistan. After 9/11, Wana is considered one of the most focused and sensitive localities in the whole tribal area. Waziristan was one of the most backward areas in educational and economical fields of life till up to the second half of the last century. Fertile lands were lying barren. Ignorance was common. Tribal internal clashes were in full swing. People were unaccustomed to the real Islamic teachings. Their life was based on national prejudice and tit for tat. Atmospheric peace and calm was phoenix in the whole region. These were the circumstances when Maulana Noor Muhammad completed his religious education in Multan in 1955 and returned home as a first authenticated religious scholar in Wana. He held up the pulpit of his ill and aged father and used it in such an attractive, affective and positive manner that today the aforesaid circumstances seem a dreadful and unbelievable dream to the new generation of the area. CENTRAL MOSQUE WANA AND ITS COMPREHANSIVE REFORMATIVE ROLE IN S.W.A . Picture Central Mosque Muhammad got people’s confidence and it was decided to extend and reconstruct the mosque on strong and firm basis in 1962. It was an intricate task to get through but the vigorous tribe demonstrated an unexamplary endeavor and completed this historical mosque by their contributions with black marble in eight years despite of very poor economic conditions of the locality. Now Maulana Noor Muhammad diverted his all capabilities for the splendid future of this distressed locals. Due to fascinative sermons on Friday’s prayer, he slowly and gradually succeeded to bring about revolutionary changes in the audience viewpoints. He endangered himself by delivering aggressive speeches against false beliefs and ill traditions of pleasures and sorrows. His sermons were focused on moral and social issues especially on women, their rights and their place in an islamic society. Physical cleanliness and its material benefits in the light of Quran and Hadith was also his stressed topic during initial stages but later on, agriculture, gardening, forestry, trade and overseas labour also became his focussed topics enlightened in the teachings of Islam. Every year in the season of plantation, the people get due speeches on the benefits of forestry and gardening. In the spring season affective speeches are delivered against crane hunting. Well-reasoned and healing speeches on different occasions are delivered through out the year according to the situations. Today, affective speeches on current issues is distinction of this mosque. Through these sermons, people of south waziristan have been engaged in regional, national and international burning issues. In short, central mosque of Wana has a unique role in the wholesome constructive revolution throughout South Waziristan Agency.

The foundation of female institution named MADRAS-TUL-BANAT JAMIA DAR-UL-ULOOM WAZIRISTAN WANA is the second revolutionary step to spread the light of knowledge in an area where the people are very far away of general awareness and education. It was Such kind of step, which has been taken in this backward area was a very difficult one. But by the grace of Allah, in this female educational section, the dilution of islamic and modern education has been made compulsory according to the religious rules and regulations. It is only education that brings about positive revolution in a back word area. It can be rightly hoped that surprising results will be seen in the near future throughout Waziristan. Government has set up girls schools in the area but due to lack of qualified local staff, they are unable to show faster fruitful results. But people are hopeful that this female institution will provide local staff to all girls schools in Waziristan. It is also under consideration to manage a nursing course for the students of this institution after completion of their education so that they may offer their useful services in their far-reaching villages in delivery cases and thus decrees child and mother mortal ratio in the area . MALE SECTION JAMIA DAR-UL-ULOOM WAZIRISTAN WANA A UNIQUE DILUTION OF COMBINED RELIGIOUS AND MODERN EDUCATION The construction of Central Mosque Wana was completed in 1968. One year later, this grand Institution was set up in 1969 and in a short period of time it turned over a new leaf of life. At that crucial time, the unawareness from the teachings of Islam was common in Waziristan. Ignorance and illiteracy was in a full swing and the society was in the grip of tribal ill traditions. These were the circustances when Maulana Noor Muhammad (EX-M.N.A) took a very right decision to impart education to the new generation of this backward area. He gave priority to the religious education for the reformation of this dragged society in the nick of time. After compromising with different man of letters and man of parts of Waziristan, he took up this great task. Within few years of its establishment, it made progress by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, in May 1976, Maulana was arrested under the charge of opposing the government. These few years of imprisonment proved a belt from the blue for the ill fated Agency, the South Waziristan. Due to this obstacle, this institution presented a deserted look because of the boycott of wazir tribe. After ten years imprisonment tenure, Maulana Sahib released from the Jail. At that time the whole area was in hot water but Maulana Sahib regained this institution, organized it and with in a short period of time, it proved a source of far reaching results in the whole area. In 1988-89, a new double storages hostel comprising 52 rooms with latest facilities was constructed. In this hostel 300 students can be accommodated. This institution was affiliated with Wefaq-ul-Madaris Al-Arabia Pakistan in 1989. In 1990-91,the construction of a grand and attractive double storage Dar-ul-Thadris (teaching center) comprising 24 rooms was completed.

Dawra Hadith Sharif (final class of religious education) was started in 1993 successfully. In 1994 Public High School Jamia Dar-ul-Uloom Wana was registered so that the students may be given the modern education. In 1999 Dar-ul-Ifta was established for the solution of complex social and economical disputes from religious point of view. A computer lab with 21 computers was established in 2000 so that the students may be aware about modern education. In school section, the subjects of science were started in 9th and 10th classes in 2002 and a science laboratory was also set up. later on, higher secondary classes were also started. Today students are getting modern education upto F.A, Fsc here and it has been decided to upgrade the modern education level upto graduation. To day with the blessings of Allah in such a backward and far off area of Wana, this institution imparts education to 700 male students to spread the light of knowledge and bring about educational revolution. This institution holds a unique position in the country due to its exemplary combination of religious and modern education. It is also a matter of proud that three students out of five in all Pakistan have been selected for AL AZHAR UNIVERSITY in Egypt on scholarship from this Jamia in 2006. Besides this, students of this Madrassa obtained first positions in S.S.C, Intermediate and B.A in arts groups in Wana sub division.

ISLAMIC EDUCATION AFFILLIATED WITH WEFAQ-UL-MADARIS PAKISTAN In this section twenty three teachers are serving. Full time teaching system is prevalent through out the year. Religious education is commenced after forty-five minutes after morning prayer according to the prevalent curriculum of wefaq-ul-madaris. Islamic books are taught in the morning. Each period has forty minutes duration. There is recess of 15 minutes after four periods. Total duration of Islamic books teaching is five hours daily. To keep the standard of islamic education, quarterly and midterm exams are held. Annual Exams are held under the control of Wefaq-ul-Madaris Pakistan. Wefaq-ul-Madaris examination center is also held in this institution. The students of different islamic schools affiliated with islamic federal board attend the annual exams in this center. A lot of religious scholars have completed their islamic education from the said institution. The annual teaching duration of islamic education of this Jamia is also related with islamic federal board. Both modern and islamic education is compulsory for the students. Affiliated with Jmia Al-AZHAR University. SECONDARY LEVEL REGISTERED PUBLIC SCHOOL. In the initial stage government primary school for boys was set up in the said Madrassa in 1971. But it was up graded to secondary level in the form of Public School Jamia Dar ul Uloom Wana in 1994 and was affiliated with B.I.S.E Peshawar. Today with the blessing of Allah, F.A ,F.sc classes are running successfully and it has been decided to upgrade this section up to graduation level. Modern education is started after mid day prayer till Assar prayer.

Due to over crowding, the primary section as well as the middle section has been divided into double classes and that is why, 12 extra teachers have been appointed for teaching requirements. SECTION FOR MEMORIZATION OF HOLY QURAN. Picture: SECTION FOR MEMORIZATION OF HOLY QURAN. During 1940, the availability of any memorizer (Hafiz-ul-Quran) and correct reading of verses from the holy Quran in prayers was a very tough task in the South Waziristan Agency. Out side visitors would come to Maulana Sahib and complained about the weak reading of the Holy Quran in prayers. But by grace of Allah many memorizers have learnt the Holy Quran by hearts from this Jamia. Islamic schools for the memorization of Quran have been set up through out South Waziristan for holding up the wholesome defiance of Quran up to this doomsday. Due to the increasing number of Islamic schools for memorizing of Quran in different areas, the memorizing section in Jamia has been kept limited.

SECTION READING OF QURAN

In this section from the very beginning boys are taught Holy Quran correctly by learned teachers in the morning session. A big hall has been built for this purpose where three teachers teach the Holy Quran to 200 students of initial stage. But due to lake of sources, this basic requirement has not been fulfilled so for. Yet a library containing 16000 books has been set up for the needs of students and staff. Free books are awarded to the students and staff from this library. At the beginning of the year, at least 500 male and 400 female students get books from this library and received again at the end of the year.
