Curious about this category and the entries on it. What is the definition being used?

Is it official in any capacity, or is just local lore such as for instance within a municipality a neighborhood might have a name, i.e. Munjoy Hill, West End, Bayside in Portland? Those are not villages, nor even voting districts, though there is certainly some overlap on that, and they are not and should not be included in this list.

So what is the criterion for the other names in this list?

To the best of my knowledge, the State of Maine only recognizes two villages with any sort of municipal organization in the entire state. One is Oquossoc in the town of Rangeley, and the other is Springvale in the town of Sanford.

This article/category if it continues should have a clear definition included since, elsewhere, in other states, in other countries, village may be defined very differently.
