Diego Hernández (born November 21, 2000) is a Dominican professional baseball outfielder in the Kansas City Royals organization.

Career[edit]

Hernández signed with the Kansas City Royals as an international free agent on July 8, 2017.[1] He made his professional debut in 2018 with the Dominican Summer League Royals, playing in 10 games and hitting .325 with 3 RBI.[2] Hernández split the 2019 season between the rookie–level Arizona League Royals and rookie–level Burlington Royals, accumulating a .278/.319/.330 with one home run and 20 RBI across 42 games. He did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]

Hernández returned to action in 2021 with the Single–A Columbia Fireflies, also playing in five games for the rookie–level Arizona Complex League Royals. In 74 games for Columbia, he hit .274/.355/.335 with one home run, 19 RBI, and 34 stolen bases.[4] Hernández spent the 2022 season with the High–A Quad Cities River Bandits and Double–A Northwest Arkansas Naturals, playing in 115 games and batting .284/.347/.408 with career–highs in home runs (9), RBI (40), and stolen bases (40).[5] On November 15, 2022, the Royals added Hernández to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[6]

On February 25, 2023, Hernández suffered a dislocation in his right shoulder while attempting a diving catch during a spring training game. The next day, it was announced he would miss three-to-four months with the injury.[7] He was later optioned to the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals on March 10.[8] After spending the entirety of the season on the injured list, Hernández was activated and optioned to the High–A Quad Cities River Bandits on July 3.[9] The Royals non-tendered him on November 17, but re-signed him to a minor league contract the following day.[10]
