Exploring a Fresh Frontier: A New Horizon Unfolds

A groundbreaking opportunity has emerged with the introduction of cerebral palsy (CP) surgery at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in the capital city, offered at a cost of Tk one lakh. Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, the founder and trustee of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, disclosed this information during a seminar on cerebral palsy surgical procedures held at the hospital's auditorium.

Dr. Chowdhury attributed the increasing prevalence of cerebral palsy in Bangladesh to factors such as poverty, ignorance, and negligence towards women. He highlighted malnutrition and inadequate oxygen supply to the brain during childbirth as potential causes of the condition, emphasizing the importance of awareness and preventive measures.

Furthermore, Dr. Chowdhury emphasized that while cerebral palsy treatment can be costly, Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital offers the surgery at an affordable rate of one lakh taka.

The seminar featured contributions from various medical professionals, including Professor Dr. Mostafa Mahbub, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Dhaka Shishu Hospital, and Dr. Nazmul Haque, an assistant professor at the National Institute of Neuroscience. Also present were Professor Dr. Mezbah Uddin, Jahangir Alam Mintoo, Gonoshasthaya Kendra's press adviser, and Dr. Kona Chowdhury.

During the seminar, Neurosurgeon Professor Dr. Faridul Islam Chowdhury delivered the keynote address, sharing his experience of successfully performing the first cerebral palsy operation in Bangladesh on November 1.

Cerebral palsy is described as a group of permanent movement disorders that typically manifest in early childhood. Its symptoms vary widely among individuals and may include issues such as poor coordination, muscle stiffness, weakness, tremors, as well as sensory impairments affecting sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing, and speaking.
