Andrew Kung (born 1991, San Francisco) is an American photographer based in New York..[1][2][3].

Life and early career[edit]

Born in San Francisco, Andrew Kung attended UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business[3] as an undergraduate before working at LinkedIn[3] in his first job out of college[4][5]. A self taught photographer, Andrew first started making pictures with his iPhone in his last year of school, using the landscapes of San Francisco as his first subject[4][5][6].

Years after working in Silicon Valley, Andrew decided to move to New York, pursuing photography as a full-time profession in 2016[4][5]. While he first started working commercially, Andrew began discovering his voice as a fine artist, exploring themes of race, identity, belonging, and masculinity in his long form projects[7][8][9]

Work[edit]

Mississippi Delta Chinese (2017) was Andrew's first body of work, photographed in collaboration with Emanuel Hahn, that documented a small, diverse group of Chinese Americans who grew up and currently reside along the Delta[10][11][12]. The piece was first published by The New York Times[13] - and subsequently by Huffington Post[14] and Voice of America[15] - giving visibility to the stories and experiences of Asian Americans in the deep South.

The All-American (2018-2022), explored the mythologized all-American figure and the hierarchical tenets of hegemonic masculinity[16][2]; through an examination of intimate spaces, Andrew constructed scenes inspired by his adolescent and adult experiences[17][18]. The project resulted in an opinion piece for CNN[19], among other features in Dazed[20], i-D[21], Paper Magazine[22], Ignant[23], and It's Nice That[24]

Dreaming on the Hudson (2022-present) is an ongoing project examining Asian American men in the natural world, using nature - specifically the Hudson River Valley - as a vehicle of escape and rebellion against American imaginations of masculinity and stewardship[25].

In years between, Andrew worked on a number of smaller concepts and projects that have been featured across CNN[26], Vogue[27], i-D[28], NOWNESS[29], AnOther[30], and Creative Review[31].

Outside of Andrew's personal work, he has photographed editorially for magazines like Atmos.[32], The New Yorker[33], L'Officiel, Paper Magazine[34], and Metal Magazine; his commercial clientele include Beats by Dre, Glossier, among others[3]
