Anwar Al-Baba (Arabic: أنور البابا) was a Syrian actor who became famous for being one of the first actors in Syria. He gained popularity for playing the character "Umm Kamel."[1]
Early life[edit]
Al-Baba was born in Damascus on April 12, 1915, to a Damascene family. He uncle was Mohammad Hosni, an Egyptian master calligrapher.[citation needed]
Career[edit]
Al-Baba started his acting career his school plays. In 1937, he took part in the play Ataturk, followed by The Crime of the Fathers in 1938. Collaborating with the Egyptian band Amin Atallah, he worked in the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in 1938. In 1939, he formed an amateur band with fifteen actors. In 1961, he relocated to Lebanon for work in radio and television, later returning to Damascus to join the Mahmoud Gabr band and the Qanoua Brothers Ensemble.
Before venturing into cinema, he gained recognition through a radio play, playing Kamel's mother and creating a significant impact. This marked the beginning of his artistic journey in 1939, filled with successes and notable roles, especially in resurrecting the captivating character of Kamel's mother, which contributed to his widespread fame in Syria and across the Arab countries.
Personal life[edit]
In 1955, Al-Baba marred I'tidal Rafi', a Syrian writer and poet. They had two daughters.[citation needed]
In 1991, Al-Baba stopped playing his role in Al Akhra ya Fakhra with Qanoua Brothers due to his brain tumor. He died in Damascus on January 19, 1992 at age 76.[citation needed]
