Bad Piggies 2 is an upcoming 3D puzzle mobile game developed by Rovio Entertainment. A direct sequel to Bad Piggies, a spin-off of the Angry Birds video game franchise,[1] the game was first announced around June 8, 2021, through ads on TikTok showcasing three different art styles the game would use.[citation needed] The game was soft launched in May 2023, before being shut down in October the same year. It has yet to receive a worldwide release.

Gameplay[edit]

Similar to its predecessor, Bad Piggies 2 is a physics-based vehicle construction game; in each level, the player must use a finite set of parts to construct a vehicle, which they must pilot to guide a Minion Pig towards the goal while avoiding crashing. Players take control of the nephew of Ross[a] and build vehicles in a limited amount of space, with some levels placing parts automatically.

Development[edit]

Bad Piggies 2 was originally pitched by Maria Mustonen, a background artist for Angry Birds Friends, sometime in 2018 or 2019 when she uploaded concept art for a sequel to Bad Piggies onto an art-based social media platform known as ArtStation. The game would have taken place in outer space and would feature oil and repair tools as new objects.[2][3] This pitch would not enter pre-production.

Months later on June 5, 2021,[3] three short trailers were quietly revealed on TikTok as advertisements, each in different art styles. The first art style resembled the first game along with the other early games in the Angry Birds series, the second was in the style of Angry Birds Toons and Angry Birds 2, and the third was in the style of The Angry Birds Movie and succeeding games such as Angry Birds Action!. Each of these advertisements lead to a page corrosponding to each respective art style, hosted on the platform GeekLab, and let users enter a survey asking them questions about the game, most notably what art style the game should use. The survey ended on July 2, 2021, and these art styles would be shown further at the India Games Developer Conference in November 2022 and in future advertisements for the game.[4]

Bad Piggies 2 would later be featured in Rovio's Q2 2021 investor presentation, as a placeholder icon for the game can be seen on the tenth and eleventh pages.[5]

In early April of 2023, the first official screenshot and gameplay videos of Bad Piggies 2 were revealed via Rovio's Discord server, in compensation for the game not reaching its original deadline.[6][7] Due to the mixed response following the game's soft launch, Rovio would regularly update the game in response to feedback, announcing each update on their Discord server.[citation needed]

Release[edit]

Bad Piggies 2 was first soft launched on the iOS App Store in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, and Poland on May 4, 2023,[1] alongside a new gameplay trailer,[8][9][10] and was ported to Android devices on May 9.[1] The game's servers were shut down on October 31, 2023.

Reception[edit]

The soft launch version has received generally mixed reviews by fans, with it being rated 3.1 out of 5 stars on the iOS App Store.[11][dead link] The game has been praised for its similarities to the first game, but criticised for its lack of in-game guidance in later levels.[12]
