Coolie is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller film[2] directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth in the titular role.

The film was officially announced in September 2023 under the tentative title Thalaivar 171, as it is Rajinikanth's 171st film as the leading actor, and the official title was announced in April 2024. Principal photography is scheduled to began in June 2024. The film will have music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography handled by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.

Development[edit]

During the filming for Master in late 2019, Lokesh Kanagaraj reportedly visited Rajinikanth at his residence in Chennai to narrate a script and discuss potential collaboration. The project was set to be Rajinikanth's 169th film as the lead actor; however, the position instead went to Jailer (2023).[3] That December, Lokesh and Rajinikanth signed the contract, with Kamal Haasan announced to produce the project, under Raaj Kamal Films International, the same month.[4][5] However, despite initial plans, the principal photography, originally scheduled to commence in March 2020, faced postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Rajinikanth's preexisting commitments, which included Annaatthe (2021) and Jailer.[6] The postponement leaded to Lokesh beginning to work on Vikram (2022) and Leo (2023), and Rajinikanth continuing working on Annaatthe and Jailer.[7]

Following three years, in early 2023, Lokesh was reported to have reunited with Rajinikanth for a potential script discussion.[8] Subsequently, Mysskin and Babu Antony confirmed their collaboration that May,[9] which was followed by Lokesh's confirmation in July, confirming his collaboration with the actor, tentatively titled Thalaivar 171.[10][11] On 11 September, Sun Pictures officially announced the venture through their social media platforms.[12] The project marks Rajinikanth's maiden collaboration with Lokesh and his fifth with the production house after Enthiran (2010), Petta (2019), Annaatthe and Jailer. The film is reported to be made on a production budget of 230 crore (US$29 million), with Lokesh and Rajinikanth receiving 60 crore and 150 crore for their remuneration respectively.[1][13][14] Lokesh revealed that the film would be a standalone film, distinct from his cinematic universe, making it his third standalone.[15] The film's official title, Coolie, was revealed on 22 April 2024.[16]

Pre-production[edit]

Lokesh revealed that he wrote the script during the post-production of Maanagaram (2017), which began in 2015.[17] In December 2023, Lokesh stated that he would not collaborate with Rathna Kumar, ending a continues streak of three films.[18] Subsequently, he collaborated with Chandra Anbazhagan on co-writing the script, collaborating again after Maanagaram.[19] It took six months to complete the first half's script.[20][21] A muhurat puja was held on 23 March 2024 at the headquarters of Sun Pictures in Chennai with the film's main cast and crew.[22] The team shot and completed filming for the promotional teaser by 9 April.[23]

Initially, Manoj Paramahamsa was announced to handle the cinematography; however, he was replaced with Girish Gangadharan, who would collaborate with Lokesh again after Vikram.[24][25] Anirudh Ravichander was retained to score the music, in his fourth consecutive film with the director.[26] Lokesh continued to mostly retain the crew including stunt choreography duo Anbariv,[27] editor Philomin Raj,[28] costume designer Praveen Raja and production designer N. Sathees Kumar.[29] Lokesh stated that they would be filming with an IMAX-certified camera, rather than filming with an ordinary camera and later converting, which he previously did for Leo, thus making it as the first time to do so in Tamil cinema.[28]

Casting[edit]

Rajinikanth would reportedly be seen as the lead antagonist, while Sivakarthikeyan would play the protagonist role.[30] Shobana was reported to have been cast as the female lead, pairing opposite Rajinikanth; whom she would reunite with after Thalapathi (1991).[31] In late October 2023, Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kannada actors Yash and Duniya Vijay were reported to play the lead antagonist role.[32][33][34] The former was initially approached for Lokesh's Leo, however, due to his busy schedule, he was unable to play the role and the role went to Arjun instead.[35] The reports were dismissed in early November as Raghava Lawrence was reported to be in consideration for the role.[36] During an award night in the following March, Sandy stated he was a part of the film, collaborating with Lokesh after Vikram and Leo; however, he did not reveal whether he would choreograph, which he did for Vikram, or act, which he did for Leo.[37]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography was initially intended to begin in March 2024,[38] but Lokesh stated later that it was delayed to June.[39] The delay was reported to be due to the makers erecting a grand set for the shoot.[40] Filming is now scheduled to begin with the first schedule on 6 June in Chennai.[41][42]

Marketing[edit]

The first look poster was released on 28 March 2024, without any pre-announcement.[47] The film's teaser trailer was released on 22 April, which revealed the film's title.[16]

Release[edit]

In late January 2024, it was reported that the makers were planning to release the film in 2D, 3D and IMAX formats.[48] Apart from the original Tamil language version, it is also scheduled to release with dubbed versions in the Telugu and Hindi-languages.[49]

Controversy[edit]

A week after the teaser's release, Ilaiyaraaja sent a notice to the makers for using "Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa" in the teaser without his permission. Pointed as an offence under the Copyright Act of 1976, the composer demanded the makers to get proper permission or remove the track from the teaser.[50][51] Rajinikanth, when questioned about the issue, stated that it was only between Ilaiyaraaja and the film's producer, Kalanithi Maran.[52] However, according to critic Sathish Kumar, Ilaiyaraaja does not hold the copyright to the song as Echo, the record label of the song, was acquired by the musical partner of Coolie, who therefore acquired their entire catalogue and own the copyright to these particular recordings.[53] During a hearing in the Madras High Court in late April, the judge said Ilaiyaraaja could not claim exclusive ownership over the song, as the lyrics were written by a different person.[54]
