Dariush Zahedi (Persian: داریوش زاهدی) is an American-Iranian scholar of University of California,[1] professor of Santa Clara University[2] and former businessman[3] who was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for "espionage" on July 2003.[4][5]

Arrests[edit]

Zahedi an Iranian-born scholar at the University of California at Berkeley[6], professor of Santa Clara University, former businessman and an adjunct faculty member in the political-science department,[7] was attending a meeting at his brother's office in Tehran,[8] arrested by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) since July 2003, on charges of espionage and moved to the Evin prison on July 10.[9]

Release[edit]

Zahedi was released after his relatives posted $250,000 (200 million Iranian tomans) bail after being imprisoned for 4 months .[10][11][12] After released and although he was technically not allowed to leave Iran, he is still subject to criminal prosecution. Zahedi had left the country since February 2004 and the charges against him were still ongoing.[13]

Reactions[edit]

International human rights groups and the US State Department have expressed concern over professor Zahedi's fate.[14]

IRNA news agency posted: "The head of the Iranian Parliament's national security and foreign policy commission has confirmed the arrest Zahedi on suspicion of spying."[15]

U.S Department of State said: "Zahedi released and although he was technically not allowed to leave Iran, he is still subject to criminal prosecution. Zahedi had left the country since February 2004 and the charges against him were still ongoing."[16]

On June 11, 2003, The Voice of America where started collecting internet signatures for Zahedi's freedom.[17]
