  • Comment: Despite the impressive number of sources covering dolltr!ck in some way, I am not convinced there are any that 1) are completely independent of her and 2) cover her in sufficient depth. If two piece of coverage fulfilling theses criteria could be found, the article would be publishable. Modussiccandi (talk) 13:13, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Claire Marie Lim, also known under her artist project dolltr!ck (written in all lowercase letters with an exclamation mark),[4] is a Singaporean American musician based in New York City.[5] An electronic music performer and producer, she was a pioneer of controllerism at Berklee College of Music as a virtuoso on Ableton Push.[6][7] She has since become a professor at Berklee and the City University of New York. She is a member of female:pressure,[8] the Audio Engineering Society and SoundGirls.[9][10]

Early life[edit]

Lim was born in Singapore, where the majority of her family resides today.[5] She took classical piano and flute lessons from a young age.[11] She attended Methodist Girls' School, National Junior College and the National University of Singapore and is an alum of Singapore's Music Elective Programme.[12] At National Junior College, Lim was a member of the piano ensemble.[13]

In 2004, Lim was a child cast member of Singaporean musical theater company W!LD RICE, working with Selena Tan, Glen Goei, Emma Yong and Chua En Lai.[14]

In 2013, Lim won 2nd place in SM Entertainment's Everysing contest, with a vocal cover of "I Got A Boy" by Girls' Generation.[15]

As a classical piano performer, Lim earned a Gold Award at the 5th Singapore Performers' Festival as a student of Susan Lai.[16] and as a composer, her original piece “L’identite” premiered at the Esplanade.[17]. She was the runner-up in "The Right Note", a nationwide singing contest in Singapore organized by Strepsils, performing with Olivia Ong.[18]

In 2014, Lim was a vocal and dance performer for ChildAid: All Stars Edition at Marina Bay Sands, organized by The Straits Times and The Business Times. She worked with prominent Singaporean artists including director Jeremiah Choy and choreographer Zaini Tahir.[19][20]

Later, Lim immigrated to the United States and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After witnessing a live show by Disclosure, she was inspired to venture into electronic music through the field of performance. She learned how to use various music software, including Ableton Live, to produce and perform live electronic music.[21] She hosted a weekly radio show on the Berklee Internet Radio Network where she DJed live mixes.[22]

Career[edit]

Lim moved to New York and worked as a music technology consultant and playback technician backing other artists while continuing to make her own music and perform and tour.[23] She worked extensively with Nona Hendryx of Labelle, performing in locations such as MASS MoCA with Richard Boulanger and Nick Cave,[24] Park Avenue Armory,[25] Harlem Stage and Joe's Pub, also performing with Will Calhoun of Living Colour.[26] In her early days, she did much uncredited work in ghost-producing and ghost-writing and would write toplines for other artists, before other producers took over and ultimately found a lead vocalist to be featured on their tracks. She has since become an advocate for fair treatment and education about the music business, particularly for other young women breaking into the commercial music industry.[3]

Lim was invited back to Berklee to launch the college's new Electronic Digital Instrument program in 2018, alongside a group of electronic performance luminaries, including Laura Escudé, Rachel Z, Thavius Beck, Moldover, and Dan Freeman.[27][28] Regarded as an entrepreneurial and influential figure in the field, she was recruited for Berklee's faculty, teaching in the Electronic Digital Instrument program as a founding faculty member alongside Daedelus.[7] Her work was used as a basis for other international electronic performance education programs, including at SJA Music Institute [ko].[29][30] She became a member of the Electronic Production & Design department on the Boston campus[31] and the Live Music Production & Design department on the BerkleeNYC New York campus at the Power Station[32] and Berklee Online.[33] She also joined the faculty of the City University of New York's Brooklyn College Sonic Arts MFA program under the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema.[34]

In 2018, Lim released an official remix of the French version of "Champagne" by My Brightest Diamond, inspired by French touch and Euro house.[35]

Lim has worked with Grammy-winning children's hip-hop collective Alphabet Rockers since 2018 with the release of their Grammy-nominated social justice album "Rise Shine #Woke!",[36] starting off as a DJ for their live shows.[4]

In 2019, Lim released her EP Innocent Intentions, which was critically-acclaimed in Singapore with reviews from Bandwagon Asia.[37] She was profiled by the Webby award-winning online community Girlsclub Asia,[38] which features prominent Asian female professionals in visual arts, design, music, dance, and theater from various countries.[5]

Lim's first full-length album, Colors of Us, was funded by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Queens Council on the Arts, and was released in 2020.[39] Previews were held at the Lewis Latimer House and the live premiere was at the Queens Botanical Garden.[40] She also released her EP Crumble in 2020, highlighted by Perfect Circuit for International Women's Day.[41]

Lim's original tracks "Constellation" and "Reverie" were featured on the inaugural compilation albums by electronic music labels NoKnt Records and GRL GANG in 2020.[42] "Constellation" was positively received with coverage from EDM.com.[43] "Reverie" was featured by EDM Identity and Your EDM alongside other songs from GRL GANG's "Wreck The Halls, Vol. 1" album.[44][45]

In 2021, Lim was featured by Spitfire Audio as a part of the She Knows Tech Summit, alongside artists such as Rachel K Collier and Drum & Lace.[46]

In 2023, Berklee College of Music announced that their students would be able to major in performing with electronic digital instruments,[47] and that Lim would be one of the professors offering courses in this program, as one of the most innovative electronic music performers and producers in the field.[48]

Lim is an Ableton Certified Trainer and a Bitwig Certified Trainer.[41][11] She has also been featured on Soundfly as the artist who leads an online course on making music with Ableton Live.[49] She is a trainer for artists under Monstercat,[50] Universal Music Group, Spinnin’ Records and Liquicity.[51]

Artistry[edit]

Lim's electronic music influences for her dolltr!ck project include Disclosure, TOKiMONSTA, Zedd, Madeon, Owl City and Clean Bandit.[4] She is also influenced by Korean pop music.[42] Her music has been described as "feel-good electro-pop",[52][53] with comparisons to Porter Robinson and Yasutaka Nakata.[4][11]

As a controllerist, Lim has cited Moldover, DJ Shakey, Laura Escudé, Rachel K Collier and Erin Barra as performance influences.[21] Her setup includes a laptop, software and a variety of MIDI controllers and digital instruments, such as Ableton Push, Sensel Morph, and the AKAI EWI.[54][41]

Lim is an advocate of women in music and speaks about industry issues related to sexism, racism, and age discrimination,[55] having experienced harassment in the past.[4] She works with nonprofit organizations such as female:pressure, She Knows Tech, Girls Rock Campaign, FEMME HOUSE and Beats By Girlz.[56] Her work with FEMME HOUSE and LP Giobbi was featured in DJ Mag in 2022.[57]
