I Love You, You Hate Me is an American documentary series directed by Tommy Avallone. Released on October 12, 2022, as part of Peacock's "DocFest", it discusses the backlash against Barney the Dinosaur, the titular character from children's television show Barney & Friends.

Production[edit]

Filmmaker Tommy Avallone became interested in anti-Barney humor after seeing a news story in which a gathering, known as a "Barney Bashing", took place at the University of Nebraska. From there, he spent two years researching to create a documentary on the topic. Avallone recounted that he believed it would be "great to explore our current times, to explore love and hate, though the lens of Barney".[1]

In 2020, the idea for the documentary was pitched, and filming began a year later. Avallone had over 50 interviews recorded for the series, but not all of them made it into the final version, including some personnel from later seasons of Barney & Friends. When filming finished, I Love You, You Hate Me was sold to streaming service Peacock.[2]

Reception[edit]

I Love You, You Hate Me received "generally favorable" reviews according to Metacritic, which gave the documentary a score of 65.[3]
