Luis Felipe Morey Arias was born in 1854, in the Peruvian settlement of Tarapoto. His father was naval officer from Spain, who later decided to join the Panama hat trade, where he found financial success. At the age of 10 Luis was sent to Belén de Pará for education. He later worked at the Iquitos Naval Factory for a short time in 1868, before moving back to Tarapoto. There, Luis became an active reader, dealing in tobacco as well as the Panama hats. When the department of Loreto requested a loan from the business community so expenses could be met, Luis Felipe Morey contributed £520, which was the largest of the contributions. At the time that amount equaled to around 22% of Loretos budget for a month. P98 La frontera domesticada: historia económica v social de Loreto.

The Morey Hermanos firm was founded in 1885 by Felipe with his brothers Adolfo and Juan Abelardo in Yurimaguas. Three years later the Morey & Davilá Co. was established in Yurimaguas, and operating in the lower Huallaga river. A year after that, in 1889, Morey, Dublé & Co. was founded at Masisea, operating in thee Upper Ucayali. P98

In 1890 one of the most “important commercial mergers of the time” around Iquitos took place when the firm Vega, Morey & Co. came into being. This company represented a business relationship between Juan B. Vega, Julio César Arana and Luis Felipe Morey.

Luis F. Morey acquired the Marcial A. Piñon & Co. in 1892, the firms previous owner was one of the few merchants who purchased Peru’s “National River Fleet” in 1877. The firms assets of course contained several steamboats, which allowed Morey to enter the river navigation and transportation business.

In 1899 Luis moved his family to Iquitos. A year later Luis’s enterprise became the fourth largest rubber firm in Iquitos , responsible for 13% of the regions exports. P 99 Luis was elected as a senator for Loreto in 1901. https://books.google.com/books?id=JaDTj-57CIcC&pg=PA219&lpg=PA219&dq=%22luis+arana+zumaeta%22&source=bl&ots=xkas-D72aB&sig=ACfU3U2Z0wpR6N9I4SF1pcF373IQqOf9vA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiezearoduBAxV8g2oFHaUHB-oQ6AF6BAgcEAI#v=onepage&q=%22luis%20arana%20zumaeta%22&f=false
