Early life and education[edit]

Ganguly was born in Burrabazar area of Calcutta. His father's name was Arghaprakash Gangopadhyay. After passing the entrance in 1896 from the Burrabazar Branch of Metropolitan Institution, he was admitted to Presidency College, Calcutta. In 1900, he passed the technical examination from Gregory Jones Institute of Technology after graduating with honours in English. Later, after passing law, he took up law business, but art and music were his subjects of pursuit.[2]

He had a special association with the Tagore family including Gaganendranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore. Ganguly was one of the founders and secretary of the Indian Society of Oriental Art. The society's magazine Rupam was a shining example of his extraordinary talent and craft.[3] He was the one who sent the paintings or works of every artist of the Abanindra Vidyalaya to the famous exhibition in Paris in 1914. In 1943, he left the profession of attorney when he was appointed as a professor at Calcutta University. He has lectured on Indian arts and crafts in China, Myanmar (Brahmadesh) and many other nations. Lalit Kala Akademi, Asiatic Society and many institutions have honoured him. A street in Bhowanipore area of Kolkata is named 'O. C. Ganguly Sarani' in memory of Ganguly.[2]
