Overlook is an upcoming American television series created for the streaming service Netflix, based on Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining. The series is executive produced by J. J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson through Bad Robot Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Development[edit]

In September 2019, WarnerMedia closed an exclusive five-year deal with Bad Robot to produce various media for the company, including television series and films.[1] As part of the deal, three of Bad Robot's projects, including Overlook, received a straight-to-series order with the intent to release them on HBO Max. Overlook was officially announced and greenlighted in 2020, with the series taking inspiration and characters from Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining.[2] Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown were in negotiations to write the series,[2] and their involvement was later confirmed by Deadline.[3]

In 2021, HBO Max halted development on the project, allowing Warner Bros. Television to shop the series to other distributors.[4] By May 2022, it had been picked up by Netflix.[5]
