Panagiotis Georgiou Gennadius (Greek: Παναγιώτης Γεωργίου Γεννάδιος) (1848-1917) was a Greek agricultural scientist who was the director of Agriculture in Cyprus and a member of the Legislative Council of Cyprus.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Gennadius was born in 1848, his father was Georgios Gennadius (Γεώργιος Γεννάδιος) a scholar and educator from Epirus.[2] His mother was Artemis Benizelou (Άρτεμης Μπενιζέλου) from an old Athenian family. Panagiotis had eight siblings, among them Anastasios, a professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Athens and Joannes Gennadius diplomat and founder of the Gennadius Library.[1]

Gennadius studied agriculture in Geneva and then with a scholarship of the Greek government and the benefactor Christakis Zografos, he was able to attent the Illinois Industrial University (today University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) between 1870-1874.[3][4]

Career[edit]

He served as director of Agriculture in the Greek Ministry of Internal Affairs.[3]

In 1895 he was invited to Cyprus by British High Commissioner, Walter Sendall, for an in depth study of Cypriot agriculture. Consequently he was appointed as the first director of the newly created Department of Agriculture in Cyprus between 1896-1904. In 1904 he resigned and returned to Athens.[4]

He was a member of Societé Entomologique de France.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Gennadius died in Athens in December 1917.[4]
