Spencer (August 8, 2009–February 17, 2023), a golden retriever, was known for holding a flag along the course of the Boston Marathon and was named the marathon's official dog by the Boston Athletic Association in 2022.[1]
Born to a breeder in ... on August 8, 2009, Spencer was owned by XX and XX of XXX. Beginning in 20XX he stood at mile three of the marathon route, typically holding a banner on a pole in his mouth. Runners were known to stop to pose for photographs with Spencer, even when this required queuing that slowed their progress in the race.
Legacy[edit]
Each year, Boston hangs streetlight banners ahead of the marathon. In 2023, those 650 banners featured a photograph of Spencer.[2]
On Sunday, April 16, 2023, the day before the 2023 Boston Marathon, a memorial meetup in Boston gathered approximately 250 golden retrievers and was reported on by the New York Times.[3]
