The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes studies of Pre-Raphaelite, aesthetic, and decadent art, culture, and literature of the nineteenth century.1 It was founded in 1977 by Francis Golffing at Franklin Pierce College in Peterborough, New Hampshire.2 Since 1995 it has been edited by David Latham at York University, Toronto, Ontario, where it remains the cornerstone of the Victorian Studies Network at York (VSNY),3 supporting York’s reputation as an international center for Victorian studies.

Refereeing and indexing[edit]

The Journal is refereed by an Editorial Advisory Board of international scholars4 and is indexed in the Annual Bibliography of Victorian Studies, Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Humanities Abstracts, Humanities Index, Humanities International Index, International Bibliography of Art, Litir Database, and MLA Bibliography.

History[edit]

The Journal has undergone three name changes: after naming it The Pre-Raphaelite Review in 1977, Francis Golffing changed the title to The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies in 1980. William E. Fredeman and Ira Nadel assumed the editorship in 1987 and moved The Journal to the University of British Columbia and cumbersomely retitled it The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite & Aesthetic Studies. Julie Codell and Lisa Norris next accepted the editorship in 1992, moving the offices to Arizona State University and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and restored its former title: The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies. David Latham accepted the fourth editorship, moving the offices permanently to York University in 1995, and has served as editor for more than 25 years.5

Professor William E. Fredeman recognized The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies as “having done more to promote a greater awareness of the movement than any single publication, while at the same time fulfilling the mandate of the specialized journal to assist in shaping the course of research in the field.”6
