Valley Gardens

Valley Gardens (sometimes known as Friarwood Valley Gardens) is a public park in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England. It is one of three large public parks in the town; the others being Pontefract Park and the grounds of Pontefract Castle. Valley Gardens are used for the hosting of the Liquorice Festival.

History[edit]

Valley Gardens were laid out in 1950 on the site of a former monastery. The gardens were designed principally by Borough of Pontefract Parks and Cemeteries Superintendent, R. W. Grubb.[1] A voluntary group, the Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens exists to preserve and promote the gardens.[2]

Facilities[edit]

Valley Gardens has a bowling green and formal gardens.

Events[edit]

A community event, Liquorice Festival centres on Valley Gardens.[3]
