Highsmith Archive.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; Built in the 1830s, it is a nearly square brick dwelling with Greek Revival details. The front facade features wide limestone steps and a veranda, with second-story balcony, Chinese Chippendale railings at both levels, and four huge, plaster-covered brick columns. The house was built by U.S. Congressman Hugh Caperton and later was home to Allen T. Caperton, who served as a Confederate States senator during the U.S. Civil War (when West Virginia began the conflict as part of Virginia) and was the first ex-Confederate elected to the United States Senate after the war. As of this 2015 photograph, the house was in the midst of a years-long conversion into a fine restaurant.
