The source video was not made available under a free license; however, the University of California, Berkeley, later published the performance under a Creative Commons license at https://youtube.com/watch?v=6un87wsu7Co?t=2395 (starts at 39:55).

Although ostensibly written in 1907, "Hail to California" was first published (or registered with the U.S. copyright office) in 1932. (See Catalog of Copyright Entries 1932 Musical Compositions New Series Vol 27 Pt 3 For the Year 1932 page 5899.) Arrangements for male quartet and band were subsequently copyrighted in 1940 and 1941, respectively (See Catalog of Copyright Entries 1940 Musical Compositions New Series Vol 35 Pt 3 For the Year 1940 page 1394 and Catalog of Copyright Entries 1941 Music New Series Vol 36 Pt 3 page 196). At the time, U.S. copyright law required renewal in the 28th year of publication; as neither the original composition nor either of the arrangements were renewed, the composition and arrangements are in the public domain.
