Description
English: Sculpted stone pier capital in East Ogwell Church, Devon, showing the arms of Holbeame of Holbeame in the parish of North Lew, Devon (Argent, a chevron enarched sable (Pole, p.488)) impaling Scobbahull of Scobbahull in the parish of South Pool, near Kingsbridge, Devon and of Coffinswell (Argent, three fleurs-de-lys gules two and one a label of three points azure (Pole, p.501). (Source: Adams, Maxwell, Some Notes on the Churches and manors of East and West Ogwell, published in Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Vol.32 (Vol.2, second series), Plymouth, 1900, p.232[1][2]) The mansion house is today known as "Scoble", an 18th century re-modelling of the older house (Pevsner, p.752). Representing the marriage of William Holbeame of Holbeame (son and heir of John Holbeame (born 1351)) and Joane Scobbell (sic), a daughter and heiress of Sir Robert Scobbell of Coffinswell, near East Ogwell. Their son and heir was John Holbeame (born 1407) (Vivian, p.473, pedigree of Holbeame).
