Summary

Description
English: An early photo of Tooele, Utah's "New Town." Founded in the late 1900's/early 1910's the New Town area was a second downtown, home to many immigrants from Greece and other Baltic States who had immigrated to Utah to work at the International Smelter. A state of de-facto segregation existed between the western "Old Town" along Main Street descended from the area's original Mormon Pioneer settlers, and the Greek influence of "New Town" along Broadway. The Tooele Valley Railway's "Tooele Station" is visible to the far left, and the railroad line cuts across the photo. Many people in Tooele attribute the unification of the two cultures and their neighborhoods in the city to the high school sports teams coached by Sterling R. Harris, whose football team of boys from both Latter Day Saint and Greek families won state championship games 1929, 1930 and 1933. New Town would eventually diminish in economic importance in Tooele though, due to the closure of the smelter and increasing suburbanization along Main Street.
