Sample is far too long for its fair use rationale[edit]

The Wikipedia:Non-free content policy requires minimal use.

The fair use rationale says "This is to illustrate Iyanya's smash single, Kukere".

As of 16:59, 4 September 2013, Iyanya did not have any commentary about this song other than it was one of the artist's more well-known works.

As the article currently stands, the only justification to even have a sample is 1) as a sample of the song that would be recognizable as the song, and/or 2) as a sample of the "sound" that this artist has which is recognizable as being of this artist.

A one-minute sample is far longer than is needed for either of these two goals. For most songs, a first line, a first line of a chorus, another well-known line, or a short well-known instrumental passage would meet both goals. Anything over 15-20 seconds begs the question "why is such a long sample required, is a shorter sample available that meets the same goal?" Anything less than 5-10 seconds will likely not be questioned. Anything in between may be questioned but not as hard as a longer passage.

In any case, the policy also requires more information about where the sample came from, specifically, the offset into the linked-to song where the sample starts.

As an aside, if this went to Wikipedia:Files for deletion, odds are high that it would not survive due to the lack of significant commentary about it on the article in which it is used. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:37, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
