In a swirling wind, he kicked a "perfect drop kick" to send the Demons' reserves through to the grand final. "Demons Win With Goal After Siren". The Age. 13 September 1954. Retrieved 17 May 2016.

A goal would have delivered a one-point win to Hawthorn, but his shot went out of bounds, and Geelong won the grand final by five points. "Geelong hangs on to win flag". The Age.
