Confusing[edit]

{{sudo}}

The following text:

If you are a new user seeking to create an account on Wikipedia, please make sure your desired name is not displayed after searching for it below before emailing unblock-en-l{{@}}lists.wikimedia.org

is very confusing. It gives the impression that you have to email a mailing list in order to create an account, which is completely untrue. I realize that users who have been blocked from account creation are directed there to ask for an account, but the distinction could be made more clear – 86.140.176.154 12:51, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

checkY Done I just removed the mailing list mention. —METS501 (talk) 16:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of sentence[edit]

Just for clarification, I've removed the last line that read "User groups, particularly "developer", may contain omissions or inaccuracies." I had added it about a month ago when I was worried that people might interpret the user lists to be entirely accurate and/or up to date. The "developer" user group has subsequently been removed (it was rather obsolete) and I felt leaving the line in their would now promote confusion, as, for the most part, the lists are entirely accurate, especially things like Special:Listadmins. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Small change[edit]

beside their names within brackets.

The word "brackets" should be "parenthesis". --Charitwo talk 19:58, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

round brackets or parentheses: ( )
Parentheses (singular parenthesis)—sometimes called round brackets, curved brackets, oval brackets, or just brackets; or, colloquially, parens, or fingernails— contain material that could be omitted without destroying or altering the meaning of a sentence.
It's more commonly called parentheses, thus why the distinction should be made. --Charitwo talk 12:06, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:19, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Patrial revert[edit]

There are no "local stewards." As such, listing the user right seems rather silly. Also, all of the groups use one-word nouns, using "rollback privileges" seems awkward. Using a show/hide box that has an awkward expand is just silly. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:34, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ipblock-exempt and accountcreator[edit]

{{editprotected}}

Can these be added, or wait until pages are made for them? --Charitwo talk 00:12, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done, by Alison. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:36, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I only spotted this request after I'd done it :) - Alison 01:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rarer examples[edit]

I don't think this needs to be an all-inclusive list. I note that developer and founder (and importer, and...) weren't listed, for example.

As such I've removed most of the examples. Leaving rollbacker as an example of an individually added userright, as well as bots, admins and bureaucrats; all the more commonly known/used userrights. - jc37 21:58, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could probably leave oversight and checkuser, as people have a genuine need to contact these people privately and searching the userlist is the normal way. Thoughts? - Alison 22:02, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had already restored checkuser.
I don't know about oversight, as it's rare, and really a more "hidden" action (as per its intent, I presume). But if you still feel that it should be, feel free to add it. - jc37 22:09, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You know, there's already a link to Wikipedia:User access levels. Maybe we should remove all the examples, to highlight that page as it describes each in a much better fashion. - jc37 22:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good plan :) - Alison 22:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They[edit]

The page currently reads If the user "Example" was an administrator, they would appear in the list below as: This usage is the singular they. Are there any objections to modifying it to the correct "he"? seresin ( ¡? ) 22:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'd never call singular they incorrect (especially not near some of the Wiktionarians!), but seizing upon the fact that this is a wiki, I modified the sentence to properly use the subjunctive (was vs. were) and changed "they" to "the user." --MZMcBride (talk) 02:18, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Updates[edit]

The example user entry is now out of date (it's missing the talk/contribs links and the account creation timestamp).

In addition, I think it would be good to add a note that not all user rights are reflected in this special page output. There are global rights and there are users who have particular rights available but don't necessarily have those particular rights currently assigned (e.g., inactive administrators, former administrators in good standing, etc.).

These changes will make the page clearer for new and established users, I think. --MZMcBride (talk) 18:26, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I've added the talk/contribs, also the date and time, because I fully agree with those - but I've not done the rest, because I'm not sure exactly how to word it to avoid confusing people (Q. when is an admin not an admin? A. when they don't use any of the additional rights) --Redrose64 (talk) 19:50, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, maybe something like this?

Accounts with special designated roles on Wikipedia will have their local group memberships displayed beside their names within parentheses. The assignment and revocation of some of these roles may be logged at Special:Log/rights. Please note that certain individuals may have global rights or may not be actively flagged (due to inactivity, a desire to temporarily step away from the project, etc.).

Or something. Not sure where on Meta-Wiki to link to. --MZMcBride (talk) 20:25, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

meta:Global rights maybe, or meta:Special:GlobalUsers? --Redrose64 (talk) 22:07, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I un-redirected and expanded m:Global groups. That should work as a link target. --MZMcBride (talk) 17:14, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done, my composite amendment is here. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:02, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

→"If a user account has some local group memberships, they will be displayed besides their names within parantheses. The assignment and revocation of most of these roles is logged at Special:Log/rights; some changes, particularly removal of bureaucrat access and all changes to CheckUser and oversight access, are instead carried out by stewards and are logged at m:Special:Log/rights; changes affecting the English Wikipedia show up with "username@enwiki" instead of just the username. Please note that certain individuals may have global rights - see Special:GlobalUsers or Special:CentralAuth to check the global rights of a user. Others may not be actively flagged (due to inactivity, a desire to temporarily step away from the project, etc.) but still retain the rights in name."

This is more verbose, but more specific and accurate.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:08, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter: Though you linked 'autoconfirmed,' it will slightly reads better as The automatically assigned autoconfirmed user right is not displayed here but can be seen at Special:UserRights. Without the bolding– Ammarpad (talk) 18:10, 5 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On MediaWiki:Listusers-summary please replace

...step away from the project or from the role, etc.)

with

...step away from the project or from the role, etc.

i.e. remove the closing ) that has no matching (. I couldn't find a good place to start the parentheses so I figured it is just easier to remove the closing one.

Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:55, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
