Protected edit request on 26 February 2021[edit]

Please import my changes from MediaWiki talk:Namespaceprotected/sandbox#Proposed changes (copy the text below this heading and stop right before hidden comment). 54nd60x (talk) 11:24, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons:

  1. $2 (the action the user tried to perform) is more useful than edit because the message is shown not only when a user tries to edit pages in gadget (definition) (talk) ns.
  2. It’s useful to show who can edit the page to avoid users from submitting requests like {{Edit fully-protected}}
 Not done this seems wrong - for example stewards can edit the gadget space. Will need to see some test cases that trigger the message as well (then will likely test on testwiki first). — xaosflux Talk 19:24, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Yes, but stewards have to assign the right to themselves first. Also, it doesn’t really matter if my requested message is accurate on testwiki - This message is shown for different reasons. For example, the campaign Namespace can be edited by admins on test wiki. However, as namespaceprotected is only shown for gadget ns on this wiki, my version of the message is fine. 54nd60x (talk) 05:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What are the workflow steps where this message is ever going to come up, that will require a English only customization as the best way to improve it (as opposed to updating the default message)? — xaosflux Talk 08:58, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: This message is going to come up when a namespace has been protected and can only be edited by a limited number of users. The protection level of the namespace can vary so my version of the message may not be appropriate on other wikis, like test wiki. If my version of the message was used on test wiki, then it would be saying that e.g. campaign ns can only be edited by staff which is not true. My version of the message is only appropriate for enwiki, or other wikis with all protected namespaces (except for MediaWiki which uses MediaWiki:Protectedinterface) set at the same protection level like Simple English Wikipedia. As for updating the default, which wiki or where is the MediaWiki default updated at? 54nd60x (talk) 13:57, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To change the default you can request it at phab. I'm not going to bother putting in a local customization here for this super tiny edge case - we should have a compelling reason to fork from default. — xaosflux Talk 16:17, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
