Perhaps an admin could add a link to purge the cache, after I kept reloading the page (clearing my browser's cache), and kept returning that error after clicking the section edit button. Stwalkerster talk 19:36, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain your situation a little more? — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:13, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible for an old version of the page to be cached, and thus be displayed to users even though it's not the latest version. If that version contains one or more sections not in the latest version, clicking the section edit links sometimes brings up the wrong section, and in particular if the latest version contains fewer sections than the displayed version, trying to edit one or more sections at the end of the page will produce this error.
If this persists even after reloading the page, the old cached version resides server-side rather than in the user's browser cache. Purging the cache via a URL with the "action" parameter set to "purge" clears the server-side caches, thus displaying the new version with the correct number of sections and no longer returning the wrong section or this error when clicking a section edit link.
By default, there is no way to purge a page without manually editing the URL to append "&action=purge" (it was presumably decided at some point that it did not merit a link in the toolbox.) This and its rather technical nature means that it may not be known to an inexperienced contributor. It is not clear from the current state of this message whether it accepts wiki-text, and if so, whether the FULLPAGENAME magic word will be correctly replaced with the name of the page being edited. If this is the case, changing the message to the following:
You tried to edit a section that doesn't exist. Since there is no section $1, there's no place to save your edit. Sections may have been removed after you loaded the page; try <span class="plainlinks">[ purge]</span> and bypass your browser cache.
This will display as:
You tried to edit a section that doesn't exist. Since there is no section $1, there's no place to save your edit. Sections may have been removed after you loaded the page; try purge and bypass your cache.
The appearence of the message can be tested by attempting to edit a section which obviously doesn't exist, for example by following this linkGurch 09:51, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar fix[edit]

editprotected

You tried to edit a section that does not exist. Since there is no section $1, there is no place to save your edit. Sections may have been removed after you loaded the page; try to <span class="plainlinks">[ purge]</span> the page or bypass your browser cache.
