OMOCAT is a multimedia artist and art director[1], most well known for their apparel brand by the same name, and the RPG game OMORI. They established their art studio OMOCAT LLC. in 2014. This article is about the individual artist OMOCAT.

Biography[edit]

Since their youth, OMOCAT has been an illustrator, and considers their artistry as an important part of their identity[2]. They grew up watching Studio Ghibli films and anime, around the same time that they began drawing[3]. Initially, OMOCAT hid their interest in anime in fear of bullying at school, and later, due to the judgement from peers in art college. This treatment drove them to create their initial art blog as a space for them to draw what they wanted, as well as a place to vent and express their emotions.[4][5] Sometime after entering college, OMOCAT decided to embrace their interests and use their artistic style to stick out amongst their peers[3] and to prove that anime can be as impactful as other art genres[4].

OMOCAT has been a freelance artist since 2010. Their art blog's popularity allowed them to create their online shop, and later, their apparel lines. OMOCAT has collaborated with companies such as hololive and Crunchyroll, and other artists such as fellow indie game developer Toby Fox.[1][6]

Omori[edit]

OMORI is OMOCAT's indie game, developed by their studio OMOCAT LLC. and launched in December 2020. OMOCAT says OMORI is packed with their personal "thematically-relevant life experiences". [5] The game's world was inspired by OMOCAT's own dreams, imagination, and experiences. Specific areas and artistic choices in OMORI reflect their personal experiences with lucid dreaming, sleep paralysis, and living in suburban America. They also say their characters are based off of their own emotions and mannerisms throughout adolescence, as well as relationships they have with friends and family members.[5]

The titular character was created from "OMORIBOY", the name of their blog. Initially, OMOCAT intended OMORI to be a graphic novel, but as the story developed, they decided to change the medium to a role-playing game, using the application RPGMaker. At first, OMOCAT was the sole person working on OMORI, but a team dedicated to creating the game developed over time.[5] OMORI has since earned 1 million sales since launching. Out of 60,895 reviews on the gaming platform Steam, 98% are positive.[7][8]
